is any compressor suitable for mastering

can any compressor be used as a mastering compressor? such as the waves c1 comp or waves Rcomp? where can i find a mastering compressor if those arent meant for mastering? thanks

The Rcomp has mastering presets (I believe they have the word 'mastering' in the name) It's fine.

You can use what ever compressor you want in the chain, they are all different.

Most guys choose a compressor that will get the job done with the sound they are chasing be it smooth or thick.


Rcomp can be used nicely for mastering.

Ahh, the dreaded Renaisannce comp. Yeah, honestly not too bad an alternative.




There's a setting called "Mastering Electro firm" that simulates that brick wall compression people seem to like.

So mixaholic, if you *have* to try it out, then try the "electro firm" setting on the Rcomp. Except, you'd have to start your threshold at 0 and slowly work your way down until you've achieve just the right amount of compression.


For a good and balanced mix, probably no more than -3db...6db probably being too much.


The electro settings in the Rcomp. It acts and feels a bit more like a hard knee setting (good for percussive stuff and overall leveling) and opto is a little more soft knee. Better for things like sax, vocals or things that are best rounded.


The "warm" setting I beleive adds the 2nd and 3rd harmonic simulation to the sound (in an attempt to sound a little more analog). Versus "clean", which omits any type of simulated coloration.



Like I said, not a bad alternative if all you have are plug-ins to work with.
