This is the AP news story:

And here is their actual iPhone video on YouTube:

But this is the same song they did a year ago in a real studio:

Now OK...it's a kinda' neat little gimmick to do it live on the subway...but it's a one-time gimmick that can never be repeated without it being totally cheesy...but I'm sure there will be some copycats where they just change their locations to try and be original.

Not sure why they're making such a big deal about it in the news....?

Not sure why they're making such a big deal about it in the news....?
Because it brings viewers and sells commercials on news programs desperate to stop the bleeding of their viewership to other media. Remember, nowadays it's not news if it doesn't bring viewers.

It's a pretty cool gimmick, and I'm sure there will be more bands that find ways to integrate phones into their act. It's like any given cheesy synthesizer. Someone will find a way to make it awesome.

However, as a primary instrument like they're demonstrating, it doesn't really have any staying power. The iPhone doesn't really have the fidelity (listen to those weak-*** drums!) or staying power (what band can afford to keep buying the next iPhone when their old one goes out of date in two years?) to form the backbone of many bands.

We had a fellow in the studio with 2 cell phones and called one to the other and used the delay and echo effect between the two of them as an effect on his voice.

Sounded kinda poop but a neat way to use modern technology. And again it's a one trick pony.

Then there's this kind of gimmick:

Not sure if he's looking for a record deal or if just likes to play naked. :D
Apparently he's now running for president in 2012 and ran for NYC mayor against Bloomberg in 2009. :laughings:
