iPad audio input

Hi y'all,

I'm looking to record our singer when she sings live, from her mixer channel to my iPad via the four track app. -so-

Will any cable that splits the 3.5mm jack into 3 RCAs do the trick? Or does it have to be 'special'?
I've heard that the video RCA will actually turn the headphone jack into an audio input. So then I can use an adapter and just send her channel to an output othe mixer.

??? What do you guys think? I'm trying to avoid the expensive dock adapters that seem to be available.
 
Well the answer was NO !

A split to 3 RCAs did not work. I'd like to know what the hell the difference is then between a cable like iRig (which lets you plug a guitar jack output into the heaphone socket) and the cable I used?
 
This product suggests the internal mic will switch over to an audio input when plugged in...

I can't understand why my cable didn't also achieve this. I would really appreciate any help in this matter, if anyone uses their Apple gadgets to capture any type of mixer/line output.

For now, I have officially given up, and will just lug my wife's laptop to our next gig and capture the singer with Audacity.
 
If it's any consolation, I've wanted to record with my iPad as well.
IK Multimedia has their products. Seems like the Alesis iO dock and iO Mix are the most useful ways to approach this, for now.

Not really sold on GarageBand, though it's neat to play with. Auria is coming out with a DAW for it. I've been waiting on the Beta Test e-mail. Supposedly, their DAW will support the use of my 18i6 (as long as I use the powered hub).
 
have you tried the camera kit adapter?


you dont want to use the headphone out put if you need to multi track anything as the track recorded will bleed over everything, there is a design flaw

I bought the IK kit and its useless for individual tracks

anything with a back ing track or multiple takes needs to be done through the 30 pin connection...I havent tried audio interfaces with the camera kit but Ive had great success with midi, give it a shot!

BTW my camera kit was $5 from Hong Kong with a $5 midi to USB cable...hows that for a cheap midi interface ;)
 
I had an iRig which wont even work woth Garage Band. Way too much interference. Going in on the out jack just seams like a bad idea. I switched to an Apogee Jam which works 100 times better. The downside is you cant charge at the same time.
 
iRig works great with AmpliTube and the noise gate activated. We are currently working on the iRig STOMP and iRig PRE which both will feature active circuitry to achieve lower noise levels. Plus with the new update we just did to AmpliTube you can use the Camera Connection Kit to use your USB interface of choice. Just have to make sure it doesn't take too much power.
