Hai guys,

I recently started with a new school project concerning generative art, i chose to explore generative music.

I imagined in doing the following

I want to capture audio from the mic (INPUT) this captured audio i want to invert in realtime within (maybe ableton ?) and output it as the generative music.

is there a way to do this with ableton or some other piece of software ?

What do you mean by 'invert'? In recording parlance, that means reversing the phase (most all DAWs have a phase inversion button on the track to do that).

first off thnx for the respons, i just want to play the generated file "backwards"

Hi,
Most recording software will have a reverse function.
I just checked audacity (which is free) and it does.

Hi,

Im a total newb when it comes down to recording software.

so does audacity let me take (INPUT) from the mic, process it, and play it backwards in realtime ?

that is what im trying to establish

Oh, ok. No.
Nothing will process reversed audio in real time.

It will let you plug in a mic, record something in full, then after the recording you can reverse the track and play it backwards.
Is that what you mean?

Alright, dissapointed to find out that this is not possible :(

thread may be now closed

Oh, you really did want it to happen in real time?
Think about it - that's impossible.

The software would need to know what you're going to say/sing before you actually do it.

There may be something that'll take chunks over time and reverse them one by one in 'real time' but and straight forward reversing of a whole track will need to be done post-recording.

Ableton won't do it real time, but it is pretty easy to select the clip and just tells it to reverse. If you have Max for Live, there is a plugin that will slice certain amount and then play the reverse in the next measure. That is about as real time as you will get.

no not really in real time, couldn't think of another term. (sry english is not my first language)

I understand that it needs to be processed first.

So INPUT data from microphone > processed by computer > OUTPUT reversed output device.

Ok,yes, Audacity will do that.
It takes about 2 clicks...very straight forward. :)

There are several delay pedals out there with a reverse function, and I think it's become a bit of standard feature on the more serious loopers out there now to be able to reverse the samples phrase. There are a few different plugins out there that will do it, too, but isn't Abelton crippled on what plugs it can use?

Honestly, though, I think you'll find the novelty wears off rather quickly. Not to sound like some kind of hipster prick, but it has kinda been done a number of different ways a number of different times and reversed human voice is just not particularly compelling. Maybe as a first step with a lot more processing and/or interpolation you could get something new and interesting, but...

??? It will use standard VST plugs. Its main limitation is it has not 32 bit bridge in 64 bit, but other than that, I use plugs that don't come with Ableton. I can't use Ableton plugs with other software.

Ok. Sorry. Maybe it was Audacity I was thinking of? IDK, never used either of them.

Probably audacity although it sounds like the OP simply wants to reverse a recording.
Audacity will do that with two clicks.

Why on earth would schools think that generative music is something to spend time on. I've been making a living from music for a long time, play quite a few instruments to the level where people pay me, and I had to Google 'generative music'. I just don't see the point. Sorry!

I thought it wanted it more or less real-time from live input. You'd have to record, stop recording, reverse, and then play, and then I guess record again or something...

This thing kind of just does it and for free.
