Invert Phase

What would be the purpose of the option to INVERT PHASE? I see it in my program but never use it.


I do know that If i take one track, and take the same track and invert phase and play simultaneously, they cancel out each other and nothing plays.


But I'm failing to realise what I can do with this trick?
 
Invert Phase (really, it's invert polarity) is used not as an FX...but to correct a mic that was not in phase during tracking.

Invert Phase is a 180 degree flip...which is basically a polarity flip. Sometimes you use two mic cables with one wired backwards on its 2 & 3 pins relative to the other cable.

If you place a mic under a snare and you have OH mics above it...the mic underneath is 180 degrees out of phase relative to the OH mics...so you Invert Phase.


Etc....etc....

Or take a close top snare mic/overhead combo- When ever there is time difference between two pickup positions- there will always be some freq. out of phase, some in phase.

Now play with polarity. Neither position is the 'in phase position, but different color versions. Neither is a true rendition, but either may be the tone you like.

To explain a bit: If two mics are out of phase, the sound gets weaker when both channels are up. If two mics are in phase, the sound gets stronger.

Phase for Width Control

Hello:

There are mixer setups that create mono compatible wide stereo enhancement FX by using the phase reverse of the console. The configuration results in center or mid information being cancelled but the left and right channels containing L-R and R-L information captured. When mixed back into the mains L and R channels the FX results in enhanced stereo fields that collapse when mixed back to mono, but expand in two channel. The Ozone width control module may use this technique.
 
Had a session with a keyboard accordion part on it and just dog awful amounts of verb on the patch, then the 'can't/don't know how to change it' from the player.
When I flipped one side, all the verb went away. I wouldn't have expected it- but it came in handy there. :D
