I'm working on a large project about a group of artists and this january I'm going to interview them all together for several hours. I'm trying to record the interview rather than take notes so that it can flow really well (also it's less of an interview than a salon style discussion on many different topics). I need a tape recorder that could capture all the sound in a medium sized room. Also, I'm going to try to keep it in a backpack or something and record it without them knowing so that it doesn't lose its honest qualities.

Does anyone have experience with this sort of thing? I have some music recording equipment but I dont think a big fostex digital 8track would be subtle enough for my purposes. I do have a nice mic that I could connect to a different machine if they are compatible.

I need something that I can leave on for like 6-10 hours and not have to fuck with it (preferably), so it probably has to be digital.

Does anyone have any ideas?

depends on how long you need to record mostly. 6 hrs is a long time to record one file in a digital realm. The small portable recorders like the EDIROL R9, would be the best but I think 3hr is about as much time as you can get out of one project. Not to say that with the propper storage card you may be able to record more but thats the limit per project. You also have to take into consideration battery life. The m-audio unit would not last that long on one charge, so thats out of the question. You may consider a wireless omni lav system on you, with the recorder in a seperate location. see if you can enlist the help of someone else to man a recorder at that location with the reciever. That would solve the issue of storage lengths and battery life.

second thought. You may try that same approach with a pzm mic in a strategic location with a bodypack wireless transmitter. Chances are most people wont recognize it as a mic anyway.
hope that helps

Some people are cool with having someone record them without telling them.

Some are not.

I recommend you approach this with some caution and consideration.

I am using 1152REC Voice Activated Recorder for recording my interview... It has the processing time of 13 to 19 hours... You may try this one...
