just wondering why the number of outputs on a card is all that important???

this is probably a very stupid question but so long as i'm not plugging into a mixer and just using the soundcard surely only 2 outputs is fine - i.e - one to each monitor.

thanks for any help.

also looking to get a decent quality multichannel interface and was wondering if external pre's are going to be a better option. CLearly in most cases they are of a higher quality - but also by having a few different types of pre's in my setup i might be able to find the right kind of pre's for certain instruments.

i had been looking a the firepod - becuase i want something rackmounted but can anyone recommend a pci card(or firewire- but probably just gonna cost more) with 4inputs(or 8), with some decent quality A/D converters and a selection of different pre's of a decent enough - (i.e not behringer). - was thinking about the Terratec Phase 88 , and the Presonus Blue Tube, Audio Buddy ......

was just thinking by having different types of pre's instead of them all being the same might be able to produce some more varied recordings and match pre's to certain sources.

Don't really want to spend more than $1000 - and need at least 5 channels with pre's......so i suppose that's probably gonna be 3 separate pre's seeing as the majority of cards come with 2 pre's built in....

happy christmas to all - and if anyone can help me that'd be great - but am very interested to hear ppl's opinions on different setup's (i.e - internal pre's vs. external pre's).
