internal or external??? any REAL diff??

I've been looking into hi end sound cards and I want to know what anyone thinks about the difference between say an internal m-audio 24/96 and the external USB m-audio sound card. Other than the differences between any internal and external device, are internal or external sound cards better??? are they all the same and it's just preference??? is one faster than the other?? I would think the internal is faster but??? does speed matter?? is the only thing I need to concern myself with is how many inputs and outputs the card has and what types?? any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

usb would typically have a smaller bandwith than a pci card with a breakout box of sorts. unless it is 2.0. the advantage of usb or firewire interfaces is mainly portability. if you were to run it on a laptop or something. you actually would get "more" of a card for your money by going with a pci style card. have you checked out any motu products? the 828 is a firewire interface.
 
i have not checked them out....but i will. i dont have firewire ports so.....i'm sure the company has something I can get with.

Ok, portability. That's a good reason. But my intent is geared toward a stand alone workstation, dedicated to music production. So an internal card probably would be my best bet u think? Should I connect my mic into a mixer with pre-amps or into the card's with a mic input??? i've always wondered that...for sound blaster junk the answer is obvious. but for high end cards...are the mic inputs suitable for recording? I'd think the should be (or damn near close) for what they charge for them!
 
I am currently running the USB Audiophile on my PC with win XP. It sounds real good, no latency at all. However, the problems I have encountered are SPDIF and Midi related.

My advice to you would be to get the PCI card. Its more reliable and less expensive.
 
the pres on these units differ. some really suck, and some aren't too bad. you are always going to get better results with an upper end dedicated preamp. what are your cost restraints? how much do you have to spend?
