My son jst bought a mac and wants to do some recording.
- What interface does he need/want for multi track recording?
- What software would you recommend?
- We have a bunch of preamps and rack gear, how do you use this "on the way in"? ( Like compressing the drums) Signal chain? Pre amp -> compressor-> interface-> computer ?

What instruments does he play and what is he looking to record? What kinds of mics do you guys have, and do you think you need any? What kind of budget we talkin here?

We are set for everything but hookin' up to computer. I have more mics than I can use and eight plus quality pres and more compressors than I can use, thanks.

Well, sounds like you are all set! (Apart from the interface a'course).

I have only had experience with the Presonus Firepod, I give that a big thumbs up for ease of use and quality of the converters - pres aren't much to speak of, but for the money it otherwise does its job very well. Also comes with Cubase LE, for what its worth (maybe nothing :p)

What kind of budget are you looking at? If you have nice mics pre's and comps, can you afford an Apogee Ensemble? Motu also seems to make good solid interfaces for mac's as well as *cough cough* digidesign. As for software, I know that Pro Tools obviously runs well on a mac, but Logic and Digital Performer also get a fair share of Mac work. Steinberg apps also usually run pretty well on macs.
