interface syncing question

I tracked guitars and vox through a USB scarlette interface. Playback is through my 2496.
I went to re-track the vox and by the end of the song the guitars and bass were lagging behind the vox. Nothing was in sync.

any ideas why this happens?
I was thinking it was because I tracked via usb and then tried to overdub playing back via PCI while again tracking via usb.

The two interfaces have their own separate clocks. While tracking you should monitor everything through the device that you're recording through so it's all running on a single clock.

Or it might be possible to clock them together through the SPDIF connections. One would be the master and the other would be the slave. I would prefer the one doing the recording to be the master clock.
