Interface-soundcard question?

I am looking to buy a simple usb/firewire interface so ican record guitar direct to my pc. My question is this........ will the sound quality be good if i just leave my stock soundcard in the pc?? I have p4 2.9 processor, 512mb ram, but its just the souncard that it comes with, the typical headphone and 1/8 mic in jack. So would the sound quality depend on the interface or my pc's existing souncard?? thanks

lose the sound card... most are made for gaming and hve little or no use in audio... doesn't the usb/firewire your contemplating have outs as well?? listen to those....

Interface = soundcard.

The external one just takes over and you ignore (turn off) the stock unit.
