Interesting wire recorder

Has anyone reading this post ever HEARD a wire recorder?

I read a website describing them, and apparently the BIGGEST degrader of sound quality on wire reels was the crystal microphone that came with most wire recorders.

Apparently, feeding them a clean signal gives MUCH better results (no sh**)

Anyone fed line level to one, or used it to mix a section of a track/song for some ultra lo-fi color? Sounds like a possibility...

When I was a kid, my dad had one. From my memories, the reproduction wasn't bad, but then I was a kid. I understand that these things run at very high speeds, and the power needed to print onto them required tubes. I do know that the wire my dad's ran made very poor guitar strings, though.

A friend of mine had 7 of these for multitracking - a bitch to synch together, and location recording required a mini van.

Chrome plated wires (if you can find them) offer better frequency response, but you have to reconfigure the coil head's driver tube to a cathode follower to achieve the higher bias required.
