Intel or AMD?

In my quest to build myself a nice DAW for under $1000, I keep getting mixed reports about which processor brand is better.

On one hand, the AMD's are supposedly better suited for audio video work than intels and actually perform better "clock for clock" according to the guy at prorec.com.

On the other hand, I keep hearing about how AMD processors have a high DOA rate and they overheat easily and have compatability issues with a lot of hardware.

So what's the deal? I don't want to get something that is going to break down after a year but I also want good performance.

Also, where are some good places to buy a DAW online? So far I keep coming back to www.Americancomputech.com

AMD hands down are faster. the slot athlons and the last series athlons had a few heat issues, but if you had a good fan you would never have a problem. the athlonXP runs very cool though. i'm using a athlonXP 1600+ with a vey large heatsink and fast fan, the chip has never been over 37c....also the athlonXP 1600+ out performs the P4 2gig hands down...

I agree with C9...the AMD is much faster then an Intel. I just got done putting together my latest unit. Although it is not an XP, my Athlon runs circles around my old PIII. This is the second AMD unit I have built in the last four months. As long as you alow for proper ventillation, I don't think you should have any problems. However Intel has better commercials then AMD...wait a minute...AMD doesn't have any commercials!

take that back, i've seen a few AthlonXP commercials...the P4 ones are stupid but funny

I'm going to disagree with you all on this, not because of my own experience but that of a friend who really knows his stuff and works at pro level. He has 4 puters and his main one is a P4 2 gig which he reckons pisses on his second puter - athlon 1.6. He reckons that with XP the P4 is the most stable and the fastest.

so there you go - who knows??

Exactly. Who knows. It has to do with hardware and the software/config you put on top of it. The benchmarks will be different. I doubt that the p4 is any more stable than the latest and greatest athlon. They are most likely pretty comparable.

Here is my answer.

Just get the best one you can afford. I have went both ways. Intel and AMD. They both performed well (have to give some props to AMD because it does run a little better with my config).
