I'm looking for an interface that will allow me to record up to at least 6 mics simultaneously on different tracks (drums). Please note whether it has builtin preamps or and outboard preamp will be needed.

Why don't you do a search on this? There is a search function here and there's a website called Google that seems to return great results.

What's your budget like? What is your computer like?

For drums, I use a Firepod...built in pres, and I think they are going for about $400 now....8 channels.

I did use the search function, I have ebay google and several other music sites open right now..

most of them read the specs in all these terms I don't understand.

all I want is something that will record 6 or more tracks at one time.. with no need for an external preamp.

the firepod is right now the only one I see that blatantly does just that..

Firepod (FP10), Motu 8Pre, Focusrite Saffire 10 or Saffire 26, Mackie Onyx 1200f

cool the firepod still looks the best and most intuitive to use.

I think the upgrade to the firepod is the firestudio. You might check that out.

The Firestudio has more bells and whistles and better sound, but it comes at the price of stability. It has the same issues as all the other units based on the DICEII Firewire chipset that TC Electronic makes and Presonus uses.

Of the list of devices I've seen so far, the only one I can recommend is the 8Pre.

The Presonus FIREPOD tends to have lots of hardware failures. The FireStudio reportedly has lots of compatibility problems.

The M-Audio FW1814 has some quirkiness. It isn't the most horrible thing I've dealt with, but its drivers are quirky enough that I probably wouldn't recommend it. It's BeBoB, with all the quirks that the BeBoB chipset brings with it.

The Onyx 1200f uses the TI chipset, so it should be pretty solid, AFAIK, but don't buy one if you're using Mac OS X 10.4.10. Apparently, support for the TI chipset broke pretty hard in 10.4.10. No idea if the next update will fix that or not; the rumor sites suggest that it probably will, but that's all I have to go on in this matter.

I have no opinion on the Focusrite stuff. It's BeBoB, which is good and bad---good in that it is a very popular chipset, so support is fairly solid---bad in that IIRC it is pretty funky as chipsets go. :D It's probably reasonable hardware, though; I have no firsthand experience either way.

If I were choosing, I'd go with either the 8Pre (Phillips chipset) or something based on the TI chipset... maybe the Oxford chipset as long as it doesn't say Behringer on the front. :D
