Maybe you should specify what you want to insulate from what - are you just talking heat retention, or do you mean soundproofing?

And Senny, your finger musta went to sleep, it's R19 for 6" walls :=)

When it comes to sound proofing- the thing that stops sound (isolating one space from another) is density- the denser the material the better- solid concrete is best- thermal insulation does little (although better than nothin) to stop sound at extremly high volumes such as the case in a studio. If your drywalling try multiple layer on each side of the wall (up to three or you start having a hard time getting long enough screws). You could fill the wall with gravel!? hmm...........anyway

If its a "dead" room your after which may be the case (little to no natural reverberation in the room) carpet scraps on the walls work well. also heavy blankets- anything think and soft will stop reverberations. If you wanna dump a buch of money in it get studio foam-

If you are building a brand new studio, try false walls. Having an airspace behind a wall creates a lot of dead air.

Probably the 'cheapest' (looking and price-wise) scenario I've seen is utilizing egg cartons (empty, of course) stapled to the wall. I actually recorded in a studio filled with these, and believe it or not it was incredibly dead.

if money is no object, the room inside a room method produces
the best results.if yer funds are limited, you can insulate existing walls with 8 pound density rockwool .ceiling too.
the rockwool makes for a pretty dead room.you may need to float yer floors as well
happy building,

Egg cartons SUCK - they have a peak of absorption at around 630 hZ, dip down, then climb to good absorption again around 8k and up. You could accomplish the same thing by covering the walls with carpet. The room will still sound like shit either way, only you could wipe it on the carpet...

If you want more informed answers, you should post this in the Studio section, page down a notch... Steve
