can anyone give me some info on whether putting monitors inset in a wall is a good space saving idea and if so how to do it and what to watch out for?:)

Flush mounting monitors is not just a space saving or cosmetic solution...if done correctly it can really improve your mixes. There's a great forum about Studio Design, and a few threads and designs specifically on "Soffit Mounted Speakers", which is the technique you are talking about...just use the search function for soffit mounting, or something like that...

Here's a link to an article from Sweetwater on tips and benefits of soffit mounting, so you can find out if it's a good solution for you...

Ton's of hits on google for "Soffit Mounting"

Good luck!

2 main things to "watch out for" are:

1) if they are powered, you need to make sure they get air and don't overheat.
2) watch the frequency response on the low end (bass) as it could (will) make it sound more bassy. Ergo make you mix bass light.

Since I put my main reference monitors in soffits they sound so great.
Id recommend it for sure.

O.k here's the deal; I want to put my Absolute 2 monitors -(yes I know I'm not talking top quality here but anyway)- I want to put them in the wall. The tiny little room that I've got for a studio is about 3mx4m and about a 8 foot high wooden ceiling and a thick tiled floor (ground floor room). I was just wondering if anyone could tell me (with a room this small) if it's a good idea to set the monitores in the wall and also what they would do to the room if they had to deal with it (pleas don't say make the room bigger!!:()

The big advantage of having in-wall speakers is that avoids what's called SBIR (Speaker Boundary Interference Response) - peaks and nulls that occur from having walls right behind and to the sides of the speakers.

there's a lot to consider - how much space are you willing to give up? the soffit mounting requires a number of dimensions to be correct to be effective for a given room, monitoring position, and monitors. you get a 6db boost by soffit mounting which will likely need compensation, plus you need to construct the soffits and surrounding area with the correct dimensions or you can end up with strange cut off frequencies. on the plus side, along with some angled slat walls, you can get really good imaging, extended response from your monitors, space for broadband and bass trapping - all contributing to a larger reflection free zone without using a lot of high frequency absorption.

then again, just mounting speakers on stands in the correct spot and adjusting the room acoustics with trapping and broadband absorption can give you excellent results, maybe even better.
