I'm thinking about using the inserts on my mackie 1604vlz as direct outs ( by inserting the 1/4" halfway ) into a motu 1224, but the motu ins are balanced - TRS !
Are the inserts bal or unbal?
I just wanna use the pre amp of the mackie and bypass the eq etc.
Any advice and/or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx!

Well...... on a channel insert..... the Tip is the send, the Ring is the Return and the Sleeve is the ground.

so U will have no problems using the channel insert and sending it to your Motu. Just don't forget that how far U plugin the 1/4 jack into the insert makes a difference, U can plug it in 1 click, or 2.

if U plug it in 1 click, it will send the signal to your motu and through the mixer, if U push it in all the way, it will still send the signal to your motu but it won't send the signal through the mixer.

Have fun,

Sabith

If your mixer has a "Pre - Post" switch, use the Pre. This will give you the signal before the EQ and Fader.

To add to what my colleagues mentioned...

Inserts in general, are unbalanced connections (think about it, they are TRS connections to carry 2 signals, so you couldn't have them as balanced signals, which use a single TRS to carry 1 signal!)
