Nilbog

hello
Can you only use the inserts for effects on 1 and 2, or can you apply them to any of the tracks? If so, how?
-Nilbog

Nilbog,
You can only use the inserts on channels 1 and 2.
The inserts work differently then the other effects loops. The insert takes the raw channel (track for mixdown and the XLR in for tracking) and puts it through an effects and then returns it right before the pre and the eq. Inserts are used for compressors and eqs where you want the entire signal to be affected whereas a typical fx loop is used for reverbs where the "Wet" signal is sent through a new stereo channel and the "Dry" signal is still intact. The two are then "mixed" together.
Hope that helps! I just got a pair of RNCs and I wish all 4 channels had inserts on them
(I have a MD4S) Oh well!

Oops, I meant to say that when you use the XLR (or 1/4 " balanced) in on channels 1 and 2, the insert's return is after the pre w/ the send after the pre. The effects in in your comp needs a line level signal. Another use for the inserts is to completely bypass the pres and eq for tracking if you use an external pre (which I recommend anyway). Just take the TS cable from the pre-amp out and only push it in util you hear the first "click" Now the out from your pre bypasses the recorder's pres for a more pure sound...
