insert effects not working???

I have been trying for 45 mins to get a dang insert effect to work. I add the effect and when its not in "insert bypass" mode i can't hear anything.... . Seems like the easiest thing in the world but it's not working.

okay now they work. but the vocoder doesn't work at all. i tried some other effects and they worked fine.

Did you read the manual on the vocoder? I would think this is something that you would want to use as a send. It should work similar to sidechaining a gate or compressor.
