Insert channel strip?

Good afternoon. I have a channel strip with a compression section that I really like. Using the in and out TS (or XLR) I/O, is it generally possible to use a channel strip as an inserted effect on a mixing board? 2) Even more generally, say for example I was using a compressor with standard send/return I/O, on a Mackie 1402 analog board. Does it make any sonic difference how many channels I'm compressing simultaneously?
Thanks

Yes you can use it as an insert.

You can also use it as a send effect, (your second scenario ) and it doesn't matter how many things you send to.it.

However, compressors and eqs tend to be inserts. This is because you.don't usually want to mix the compressed or eqed signal with the dry, uneffected signal. That is what happens when You set up.an aux send.

The next thing to remember is that when you.send multiple signals to a.compressor is that you will be compressing them as a group.
