Hey guys.
I just signed up for this forum. Anyway, I have been making music for quite a while now. I started out a drummer but have now branched out and started writing songs. Currently I am in a band consisting of four songwriters and three of those (excluding myself) are great vocalists. However, as I am also writing I would love to be able to sing as well but I am extremely insecure about my voice and would therefore like to hear some honest feedback regarding my singing voice. I have attached an idea I am currently working on. All feedback will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

There is so much effect, I couldn't tell if it was a person or a computer voice. I need to hear you to give a comment

but I am extremely insecure about my voice.

This insecurity shows up in how you sing. There is an inhibited quality in the singing . . almost as if you are trying to avoid singing. There are times when I've sung like this; for example, when I've been worried about someone hearing me from the next room.

Consequently, I don't think we are really hearing what your vocal quality really is.

I reckon your voice is probably ok: no better and no worse than all the thousands out there doing the same thing.

What you could try is just a single vocal track, and give it your best shot. Sing it as strong as you can and try not to repress it. You might surprise yourself.

you dont have to be a "good" singer to be a "great" songwriter....

that said, I didnt go listen to the example, anything Geck says comes better recommended than i can say.

but, worst comes to worst? lets say those other 3 cats ARE better singers... *whatever* they might end up needing YOU to write them songs, if you are/get good at it...

if you started out life as a drummer? (I did...) I know it took me a while to get any "ears" just for writing music, as well as the learning curve of dealing with pitched music. (mind you, i cant sing a NOTE, lol) but... I can sort of "hear" a good singer in my HEAD when i am fooling around.... kind of like when i sing along (terribly) to a CD or the radio? i am "singing along" to the singer in my head...

Example: Ms. DIANE WARREN is one of the "best" songwriters ever in the pop genre. She has the distinction of having a song she wrote be "#1" on something like SEVEN different charts at ONCE. Thats country, pop, hip hip... etc etc... SEVEN different charts? (yeah, like, *WOW*)

anyhoo... i saw her on a show once, she sang one of her "songs", and just played along with an electronic keyboard... she was nothing special as fr as the singing or the keyboard playing went... BUT, they ALSO played the number one HIT it spawned for the "real singer" that did the song and made it a hit...

difference was like night and day... SINGING and SONGWRITING are different skills...

Everyone...Even the best singers you can think of....Everyone is insecure about their voice. It's just all about finding the courage to suspend your self criticism long enough to learn and grow and get better.

Hey folks.
Sorry for the late reply.
Thanks so much for taking the time to listen and write the feedback. It is really just a matter of over coming the insecurity.

Just step up to the mic and own it.

Yeah, it's not good :-( But the reason isn't so much your ability... It's your attitude. Being a singer is about confidence?

Whether you think you can't, or think you can? You're probably right...

You have to "own it." If you're singing a song, it's all about attitude, and like in a singles bar? They can smell fear. I'm getting ready to do another Van Hallen cover... Try doing David Lee Roth without believing yours are the largest in the room? It ain't happening... I may wear 3 socks when I record it? (with none on my feet...)

You should start out by practicing scales, and you can use SW to see if you are hitting the notes.

Then Intervals, i.e., instead of just singing a scale, going through major 3rds, and minor 3rds, etc...

Here's a site I found w/a quick Bing search, I'm sure there are many more;
