hey. i'm looking at more computer recording systems, and i found one with 8 ins, 8 outs, an xlr in, and an xlr out. i know that you plug instruments and mic's into the ins, but what exactly do you do with the outs?

Multiple outputs can be used if for some reason you want to use the computer just as a hard disk recorder, and mix down to a DAT or CD-R (free-standing) externally. The main use for multiple outs would probably be for feeds to separate amp/speaker channels in 5.1 surround mixing. 8 outs, if your software supports it, would allow a stereo mix AND a 5.1 surround (6 channels) simultaneously. You could also use some of the extra outs mapped to your software's aux sends/returns to feed an outboard analog processor, such as a dedicated reverb. You would return the reverb feed thru a pair of the in's in that case... Steve

so when it comes down to it if i don't care about mixing down on an external module your saying they're for hooking up monitor speakers

To amplify (oops) on what Steve said, if you are just creating a stereo mix in the software, you will only need two outputs (left and right). In addition to the examples Steve gave, another nice advantage to having more than two outputs is so you can create seperate cue mixes if you are tracking more than one musician at a time. More outputs allow the possibility of sending different mixes to each of the players' headphones, depending on what they would like to hear to optimize their performance.

If you're talking about eight line inputs, you won't do too well plugging instruments or mics in them...
