Input issues

I am using a Dell Laptop C840. I am wanting to record my electric piano into Cool Edit Pro...i have it connected through the input jack and i can hear it in the headphones connected to the computer, but nothing records in cool Edit when i arm the track and hit record. I didn't have this issue on my desktop, but unfortunately don't have it anymore...is there a setting I'm missing?....
Now the other thing is that i can use the internal microphone built-in and it records, but when i plug it into the microphone jack...NOTHING!!!...i have searched for some type of mute for the internal, but haven't found anything!!!

HELP!!

Any thoughts?

In Cool Edit, go to Options-->Device Order-->select tab "Recording Devices"

In the right box, see if any device is in there.

Input Issues

I figured it out.....basically i didn't have the microphone actually selected in the windows volume control. I had the volume up, but it wasn't actually selected.
