Input Filter - PreGain Automation

can someone explain me the difference between "Input Filter - PreGain" and " Volume" automation in Cubase?
which to use when?

I use it when the level is low but I need to drive something a bit harder - so noise wise, the input is just a bit weedier than I'd like - in my case bass guitar - I can just up the level a bit before it sort of gets 'in' to Cubase as a real thing. I often add a touch of compression and it works better when the level is a bit higher. In fairness, I should really walk across the room and turn the gain up, but with that control, it sounds very much the same - and gets the meter moving a bit more too. Other than that I don't use it much. volume automation hasn't anything to do with this has it? A different process.
