Initializing CDs on CDRII

Got the CDRII connected to a VS880 VExp with 3.204A OS. When I try to backup or copy to the CDRII - it tells me the CD is unformatted. When I try to initialize the CD it starts the process, lites up the 'read' light on the CDRII and even spins the disc but stops with Err: illegal request. The CDRII is the only SCSI device connected, its ID=5, the terminator is switched on.

What am I doing wrong? Does anyone have any documentation specific to using the CDRII with the VS? The Roland site only talks about the VSR880.

I just discovered the CD-R menu items under the Song button. It offers to make a copy of the mixed song or backup the trax and scene info. I tried both. The 880 does its thing and when it gets to the point of putting data on the CD, the 'write' light is illuminated for a little while and I get Function Failed. It then ejects the CD. I even tried CD Recover just for kicks. It accessed the CDRII and found the song name of the file I tried to backup but after reading the CD, it said Function Failed and ejected the CD. This is getting very frustrating.
