Hi guys I'm new here so forgive my ignorance. I have cool edit pro and want to record my drummer so i can mix his drums on my pc. the recording quality doesent need to be steller but good ( this is a cheep demo). I saw the bheringer ada8000 on AMS and i thing that will work for a preamp/ a-d converter, but then i need some pci card to connect it all. And then will it all work with cool edit? The only ADAT pci cards i find are more than the bheringer unit. Any sguestions would be helpfull. Im not a recording guy im a musician who knows a little about computers/ recording so dont hurt my brain please. Thanks!!

you can always use your onboard sound card for 2 channels and get 3 more soundblasters for 6 more inputs. This will work...but I really hate to recommend it. I would expect it to be very noisy. If I were in a situation where I HAD to record 8 channels and I only had the ADA8000 and $60, Id grab a few soundblasters and go to town. Just remember you will need plenty of adapters and stuff to go from 1/4 jacks on the ada8000 (i think thats what it has) to 1/8 jacks on the soundcards. The 1/8's should be stereo and split into 2 mono jacks that will need adapters to fit the ada8000.

I hope I dont catch too much hell for recommending this. It will work...but I doubt you will be satisfied with the quality.

Yeah, buying many 2-channel soundcards may work, but it sure is gonna be a pain. In fact, I'm sure thats the absolutely worst thing you ca do.

Buy either an 8-channel soundcard, I'm not sure f there are any with 8 preamps, but if not, just buy a rack of 8 mic preamps, or buy something like that Behringer A/D can be used to, and an ADAT interface. I don't know anything about those, though, but that Echo Gina mentioned above should work.

There are cheap (200 USD and under) ADAT interfaces.

EWS Terratec 88D
Steinberg VSL 2020
E-mu 1212M

That with that ADA8000 would put you at around the 400 mark...which will be around where you can get plain old 8+ channel interfaces. Echo and E-mu come to mind.

You can only run one SB Live in a puter. They don't support multiple SB cards.

I dont remember exactly which card I used, Im almost certian it was an SB. It was several years ago...I do know that i bought them from Walmart and that I had 2 of them plus my onboard card for a total of 6 channels. There were several bugs to work out..but it did work.

thanks for the responces. what about the software ?

will cool edit pro handle 8 simultanius inputs?

Properly configured, yes.

But you need a lot of RAM, and a fast HD.

If you don't want to go the adat route, a Yamaha MG12/4 mixer and a Delta1010LT pci card will get you 8 inputs for around $400

I used the E-MU 1212M and the Behringer ADA8000 with some success...

cool edit has 128 available tracks...if your computer is MAN enough and you had the inputs...it could probably handle 128 at once...:P

I have 8 ins and I use Adobe Audition and I use all 8 all the time.

I have a P4, 3.4 ghz, 1 gig ram, 2 160 gig harddrives. No problems here...

I use a pair of M-audio Delta 44s for eight analog ins. If you're patient, you can score them on e-bay in the $70-90 range, so the pair might run you $160 or so (maybe less if you're lucky/patient)... Brand new, I think they run about $150 each. You will still need a mixer, with preamps, and maybe phantom power...

Is the Delta 101LT their cheapest card with eight analog ins? That might be a better route in the long run, although the pair of Delta-44s has worked well for me.
