Hi,

I am looking for a portable/compact digital recording solution that isn't going to break the bank.

I want it to record wedding vows via a device that will require an external microphone input. I want it to be small and lightweight enough to fit in the grooms jacket pocket.

Ideally I would like digital wallet, image tank or Multimedia Digital Data player+recorder, which would allow me to store my digital photos and video but also record digital audio. This would be a more expensive item, but I'm willing to put out the cost since I'll be buying a portable image storage device anyway.

Alternatively I would like a recording device that will write onto a CompactFlash card, but is cheap and compact. The only one I've seen on the Internet is the Marantz one - which looks like a brick and costs about the same as a bar of gold. I know a cheap, compact solid state recorder exists, but it only records for 30-60 second (and has no mic input). I need it to do at least 60-90min.

It seems that the main type of device that is popular these days is Mini-disc players/recorders. They conform to my lowest expectations except that the cheapest one with microphone input is > $500 AUD.

Please help!!!

Thanks,

Jason

One alternative to consider is to get a simple wireless lapel microphone. Then get a suitable recorder and use the output from the wireless for recording.

Ed's wireless mic suggestion is a good one.

The only decent digital recorder I can think of that fits in a pocket is an MD machine, which would be more than adequate quality for what you're doing. They're used by radio journalists all the time. Used one should be about US$100. The Marantz is definitely overkill.

If you only want to capture the words of the ceremony and are not recording music, there are dozens of little voice recorders out there less than half the size of a pack of cigarettes with capacities up to several hours. Check any electronic gift sites for Digital Voice Recorders.
