Ok, been down that road, the road of david Hooper and all those indie music marketing books and I have to say, that while some of the info in those books is useful, the reality is however, a waiste of time to dabble deep into their plans that are in those books....... you can read more in depth about it at my web site at www.weatherbill.com and click the article "The Truth About the Music Industry"
bottom line is, any artist who is going to make a full time living doing music has to have a team of people behind him and some good momentum..........bottom line, an artist cannot survive by doing it all themselves.
I have seen great local bands struggling and continue to struggle and will always struggle, unless they get hooked up to some industry.....the new age of digital has equipped too many people to be able to get out there with their music, that there's not enough fan base going around to support it, unless you have some mass media and working the press and numerous other things that are needed for a successful music career and no artist has all the time needed to care for all the details, like those indie marketing books out there would lead you to believe.....then where is the time for the music itself???

I read it... what's your point?? You kind of just trailed off.......... or was this a "stream-of-consciousness" writing???

I don't imagine you're feeling very positive about your songwriting ability. Am I right?

what's my point? I think I was pretty clear, that those books can't really do the job of getting you into a full time living doing music as an artist or band if you follow them. You need a team of people behind you and some capital, two points of which all these do it your self indie books fail to tell.... those books are not worth the money or the time and effort in waisting your resource. The best thing for an artist is get hooked up with good management who can get you into show casing with A & R's.

As for the guy with the idiot assumption that I may not have confidence in my song writing ability, nothing could be further from the truth. I've been at this for almost 10 yrs Mr Assumption and I have killer hit songs and great song writing.....that's why I'm still at it and not only is my song writing great, but people have told me I'm a good song writer and not only that, I can make a hook that you would swallow and choke on, so choke on that pill if you can Mr Assumption ....go to my web site and hear the lyrics I have for my songs....download them for free and I'll proove you wrong before the entire world.....oh I love it!
Fuel for my fire!!! Keep it coming baby!!!!!!! LOL LOL LOL !!!!

OK simmer down bud.
Your tunes are OK.
You're right. Most of those books bite.
Two that I love are "How to Successfully Promote Your Music on the Internet" by David Nevue and "How to Build a Music Website that Sells" by Mihkel Raud.
I've read them all and most are not informative. Those two are inspirational.
Rock On Hookmaster!

I haven't been to weatherbill's site, but do agree with his post.

I would imagine these books are useful as a handy source of inforamtion in one place, information that is freely avbailable elsewhere but maybe not in as convenient a location. And that's about it really.

Assuming you already have talent and charisma, they (the books)cannot give you the lucky break or the chance meeting which is so necessary to get you 'in' to the business and access to the support you will need. Nothing wrong with that, as long as they don't make stupid claims like read this book and definitely have a career in music, cos no-one can guarantee that.

Oh, and calm down weatherbill, you get too easily offended!

Very good point! A fool and his money are soon parted!

Why waste your time writing, recording and playing music when you can cash in on the lucrative Wannabee Market, selling hope to the hopeless, praise to the tone deaf, and pipe dreams to the Dreamers!

My NEW BOOK will show you the easiest ways to fleece the unsuspecting lambs and lead them to slaughter!

Indie music marketing book foolishness

Hmmmmmm.......I noticed that David Nevue's book claims to have helped an artist sell 3000 CD's in 9 months. Suddenly I find Mikhel Raud's CD was in the top ten sellers on CD BABY selling, you guessed it, 3,000 CD's in 9 months. However, according to Mikhel in his ebook, it was all because he is so great at building websites and that was the key to selling so many CD's. However, after a little research, you will discover that his CD got MAJOR press coverage with the associated press. NO WONDER HE SOLD SO MANY!!! Mass media coverage!

So, David says it ws because of his book, Mikhel says it was because of his website building abilities when it appears to have been neither!

Please correct me if I'm wrong!

Hmmm, I guess he'd only say that the reason he got the wide media coverage was because he followed his own advice in his book!! Yoyu won't win with these guys. Then again, maybe he is very good at self promotion?

Mihkel claims himself his book is inspired by Nevue's book, then taken even further.
While I like both books, the Raud book claims all of the sites he's done this way are major sellers - yet only that one CD is mentioned - over and over.

My question is - how can a strange Gregorian chant CD of Black Sabbath songs with an endorsement from Bill Ward himself not sell????

I wonder how many would have been sold without Bill's endorsement? Seems to me that it would have never even got the press coverage without his endorsement, let alone the sales.

I love Sabbath almost as much as I love Led Zeppelin:-)
Seeing that endorsement almost made me buy it!! But when I went to CD Baby, they were out of stock. And I never went back:-)
If it were in stock, I was going to buy it just because Bill Himself dug it.
