Indie band Chob is at war with Alanis. Chob(an unsigned true indie band from Australia and proud indie ring member and home recorders) is currently #25 in the mp3.com Alternative General charts under Alanis Morrisette, what the hell is she doing there. Help CHOB skull that fathead by going to www.mp3.com/chob and downloading "All Fall Down"(recorded using Yamaha DSP factory and Logic Audio). Feel free to call on Chob anytime to help fight main stream monsters like Alanis and Phil Collins.
Please pass this message to everyone.

Cheers,

Jay

Ms Morissete is far from being a fathead. You've got two posts to your name, and you're stirring up votes? On yer bike mate, and get yerself to Adelaide, city of churches.

Never heard of Chob.

Are they any more ironic than Alanis?

I'm sure I'll get flack for this, but Alanis sucks...nobody seems to remember her musical past as a pop princess wannabe..didn't work, so she jumped on the "Alternative" (read x-rated lyrics) bandwagon...however, Collins has evolved musically thru the years, and quite nicely, too....I suppose they both want a piece of the so far non-existent mp pie....gibs

canniballistic , humanoid , overweight bitches..

i hope to be a main stream monster one day..

Okay, Eddie, you spotted it, so you get to keep it - your band name, that is. Mainstream Monster.

Not that it's got anything to do with computer recording, but what in this thread has?

My gripe is why oh why is Alanis in the Alternative Charts at MP3.com. It's because the record company uploaded her songs in that category "Alternative General".
Alanis Morrisette- alternative, please, give me a break. She is an in-house puppet and cock sucker at some huge "give me a blow job and I'll think about it" record company with less artistic credibility than Brittney Spears or what ever the fuck her name is.
She is stealing the glory away from dickheads like me doing interesting and creative music that will never be played on mainstream sickening radio stations. No, our place is at places that serve the minorities the goods they desire ALTERNATIVE to the crap that spews out of commercial radio. Hey I don't care what music people like, each to thier own. If you like Boy Bands, good for you, go for it dude and love it as much as you can but keep it away from my house at mp3.com.

Doesn't Alanis Morrissette own a bunch of shares in mp3.com? Ugh...might have to research this a bit, but I believe that she worked some deal out with them just before they went public and ended up with something like $100 million worth of stock.... if someone can correct me on this or back me up, I would appreciate it.

I understand your frustration with Alanis, and I agree in principal; however, MP3.com makes no claim to be an underground or independent music site, so you shouldn't be surprised that they're catering to the big name acts. I'd suggest that you look into an MP3 provider that is more underground oriented such as IUMA.com, or garageband.com. There are tons out there that are more interested in furthering the careers of bands such as yours. Do me a favor though...if you sign up on any of the sites I suggested, put me down as the guy who refered you to them. I get points. I'd suggest you sign up with all of them...you are bound to reach more people than you will just using one. Good luck!

Point taken C.Miller.
There are many catorgories in which artist can upload their tunes into at MP3.com. I just wish Alanis's crew would put her in the "POP/ROCK" catorgory. It suits her much better and it would keep her out of the alternative charts where she is pissing off real alternative artist.

Cheers,

Jay

That might be true and I'd certainly agree that she isn't alternative anymore. I mean, alternative to what? She's mainstream pop. But, I'm sure she sees herself in a lot different light than we do. I don't think there's any use in bickering over catagories. I don't mean to sound demeaning, because I don't mean it this way, but if she wasn't one spot ahead of your band, where would you be? One spot higher on the chart (#24). Hardly worth the fight. Good luck though!

Yeah, but what actually is alternative? Perhaps Nirvana were back in 1990, but the genre 'alternative' is somewhat more blurry now. Is it actually a genre? Or just a way of saying "I'm trying to capture that lucrative 15-24 year old market"?

Was also uinder the impression that mainstream meant that commercial radio had 'discovered' you, and added you to the play list.

I was always under the assumption that alternative was/is the category that commercial radio stations used to classify songs they didn't generally play. I didn't think artists decribed themselves as 'alternative'.

Not a huge fan of Alanis - sort of over the whole whingeing thing. Probably wouldn't describe her as alternative, more annoying than anything else (personal opinion)

The All Music Guide, allmusic.com, has some great articles written on this subject. Just do a search for "alternative". Find out what MTV's 120 minutes was playing back in its inception and compare it to lately.. My Bloody Valentine and They Might Be Giants *were* called alternative, but that was almost a decade ago. Alanis *is* the new "alternative". College radio (CMJ charts) is much more indicative of the real progressive independent music scene, but still it favors the more established artists and labels (who can afford the heavy promotion). For even more confusion try "indie". Ugh. Why was this topic under computer recording? :)

It's MP3.com, what do you expect. Any high profile site is bound to be laden with commercialism. Anyway, what better way to get votes/hits to your site than to get your name out as much as you can. Posting it on homerecording.com is just another way. It's digital exposure.

Alanis may suck but her bassplayer can surely play!

A lot!
