wow -- quite a find dave!

part of me is delighted to see such history available for sale... part of me wonders why it has been only a handful of days since his passing and the cashing in has already begun... so i am both happy and sad at the same time...

Ooooh..I've seen some biggies but this is pretty extreme.

I predict this guy's going to have a most unpleasant rest of the summer shortly. In fact I think he's going to have a most unpleasant set of years on the way.

Billy Preston will be surely missed for a long long time.

Yeah, it's sad.

Not to say that it wouldn't be kinda cool to own a little piece of history like that, but it's kinda soon and I'm not that much of a ghoul!

I'd not have anything to play a 2" 30-ips source tape on, anyhow. ;)

I thought Billy Preston was great. I think I saw him in a small club, back in the early 80's.;)

Hey Reel,

Been awhile (hope all is well and well is all at the Tascam museum).

This is a weird find indeed.

I don’t know, but it seems the transfer of intellectual property would be illegal no?

Can one own and sell someone else’s master tapes but obviously not release
(duplicate/distribute) the mixed down material?

I’d be interested in hearing someone from the legal arena chime in.

Maybe I’m wrong, but if this sale isn’t connected to his estate,
then ghoulish really seems to sum it up.

-Good eye-

Sure man, . .Anyone can can own those masters without any legal implications! You can own them, You can frame them, You can display them in your living room, and you can even listen to them over, and over again. . . But ya cant charge now one to see them or hear them, .. or duplicate them, . or make copies and distribute them. . .

They are just Master recordings of various songs, . really no different then owning one of Billy's cd's, . . except that you have a whole bunch of fader control. . .SO, you can sit there all day and all night, . . sliding all 24 faders in and out, . . More snare, . . less snare, . more guitar, . . less bass!

More than likely those masters were acquired form a trash container of some LA recording studio, . . or possibly some auction house selling off some old gear from a defunct recording studio, . . I'm sure that whoever, or whatever company owns the publishing rights to those Billy songs, . . already has them on a digital master, . .so, when the time comes, . . and Billy is hot again, . . they will be selling Billy's complete cd collection on late night TV. . . I might be completely incorrect, But as cool as we all think these Masters are (myself included) I don't think they will be too many people knocking on anyones door looking for those lost Billy Preston Masters, . . :o

No matter what the deal is, . . Billy will be greatly missed. . and I'm sure all our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family.

Definitely, the last of one of the great 'old school' musicians.

I see your point Studio, i suppose it would be no different than re-selling a cd.

The idea of it being a master freaked me out a little.

-Rock on Billy-

Hey Bill, I was just being a smart ass, . . :p Cause, I know exactly your feeling man, . . I totally feel the same way about 'Masters' as you do. It must be the love for analog in me! :D Especially 24 track Masters from someone as great as Billy. To me any Masters are like the scared Dead Sea Scrolls, or the 'Cup of of the Covenant, . . .So, I feel ya brotha, . . But, I think that with the new digital era, . .and the age of digitally re-mastered originals~ After they those masters are copied, I don't think most Mastering companies have much use for them anymore, . . Now, I'm sure that's not always the case, . But, for the most part I think that might be the case. . .

I think it would be friggin' cool to have grand masters layin' around like that, especially of someone THAT great, to just remix stuff.

Hell, if nothing else, I'd use the tapes as practice tapes for practicing analog mixdown. If I had my own recording class, I think that would be a worthwhile use to put the tapes to. Gotta be some awesome tracks on those things.

The whole thing seems kinda weird to me. It'd be foolish if they were to have transferred the original tapes to digital and then thrown away the original analog masters. I don't think they would have done that. They must be copies or something.

I just noticed whe I looked at it again. The first line is " Music recordings from Billy Prestons "master copies"

Still, it'd be great to have if you had something to play it back on. He was great!
