What would be the best way, if possible, to integrate an MSR16 (reel to reel, 16 tracks) into my recording setup, which consists of 2 Laylas? Is there any way to sync them? How do big studios do this? I've heard that studios use Protools with 24 track 2inch? How??

More Info...

This is why I'm asking:

I'm merging equipment with a budy of mine to record local bands. He has an analog setup, but he's always liked the sound that I get using digital. I've done some recordings on his analog setup, and it sound FAT! So he's purchased a computer and a layla too, which makes our gear 2 layla's, a msr16, myriad of outboard gear, plugins, mics (good ones)...

But know, we want to find a way to make use of everything ... is this possible??

Of course! Just do all your tracking to analog. That may be good enough alone, just mix it off that to the computer in stereo. If you need to do a lot of edits you can always transfer the 16 tracks to the computer and edit the individual tracks there. When you are done just mix out of the computer into a mixer and into 2 tracks of the msr 16 for a stereo master.

Analog all the way baby!

Whats the advantage to mixing back to the MSR if I'm going to have to burn it to CD, which means feeding it back into the computer?

Is it recommended to use standalone CD Writers? I was thinking of maybe purchasing a nice standalone writer, along with maybe a good EQ and compressor so that I have the option of keeping everything out of the computer...

So, there are no synching capabilities with the MSR?

If you had my equipment, and $2000 to spend this weekend...what would you buy?

Well, I would recommend getting a nice 1/4" tape reel machine to compliment your analog setup. I find the sound of sound mixed through a mixer sounds better than a pasetd together sounding computer mix. Don't get me wrong, I do a lot of those and they acn sound good, a good analog mix has a way of gelling together that a digital mix can't touch. Either way if you want to record and mix in analog or use your tape machine as a signal processor for your tracks it will have a very audible effect on your mixes and recordings.
What kind of mixer do you currently use?
If I were you I'd want a nice analog TASCAM mixer and a 1/4" Otari or something.

The mixer being used now is a tascam mixer. the analog unit is the msr16 (as mentioned) 16 track 1/4"

I also have a mackie 32*8... To me it sounds like my mackie would be much nicer for the job...sound aside, the routing is sooo much better on my mackie...maybe i'm just more use to it....what do you think?

I'd like some nice compression units...i know avalon makes some, but they are integrated with the preamps....

I have no idea which would be better because you didn't say WHICH TASCAM you have. I did not know that was a 16 track 1/4" machine. I was suggesting a 1/4" 2 track for mastering but I thought you had the 1" msr machine. I am not sure how much sonic benifit teh 1/4" 16 track would be to your studio as I've never heard one.
For compressors check out the FMR RNC.

Answer: SMPTE. You have to sacrifice one track of your reel-to-reel to record the sync pulse, then set the computer to follow. I used to do that a lot (i wanted tape saturation so i used analog tape for vocals and part of the drums), and it was not easy, but that's the way you do it.

SMPTE boxes are not expensive. I think (that was way back, so i'm not sure) mine was a second hand Midiman - cheap, but it did the job. The trick was to make the digital follow and analog lead, it can be done the other way too, but capstan (the part that moves the tape) controlling is quite expensive.

BRILLIANT!!

Thats exactly what I wanted to hear. SMPTE is sounds like the way to go. I'm gonna look into that. Thanks alot!

What you want for syncing is the TASCAM MIDIizer.
