Incorporating Avalon SP 747 w/Cubase SX

If I were to purchase an Avalon Sp 737 EQ/Compressor to master material that can't be taken to a real mastering facility, how would I incorporate it with Cubase Sx. Specifically, is there a way to send my mix from a bus other than the master engine on cubase (as I've heard bypassing the master engine on these programs [better] preserves the fidelity of recordings), put it through the Avalon, and then return the affected signal back into my PC (or Cubase)? Getting the signal to the Avalon is simple, but I how would I return it to my PC (or Cubase SX) without loosing quality??

Well, for one thing - the Avalon is a single channel unit, so it would be useless for mastering.

Second, it's not really a unit designed for mastering anyways (even if it were 2 ch!)

Third - if you're doing most things "in-the-box", then get yourself a few decent mastering plugs and do it all internally. It'll save you from having to come out of the box into hi-end D/A converters so that you can interface with an analog unit.

Duh! I meant the 747...sorry about that. But you're right about the D/A A/D converter situation - that does sound like a big mess, and I had completely ingored it...

Are there any mastering plugins that you can suggest for Cubase SX? I'm looking to get as close as I can to the real thing, and frankly, although I recognize the benefits of digital applications/plugins, I'm still not entirely sure that I would use that in lieu of an avalon/manley unit. Supposing I would take the signal from my layla into the 747 and then (somehow continously) back into PC, will I achieve a better result than relying on some mastering plugins? I already have the GRM Mastering Tools for Steinberg and I am not too impressed with it. I'm not dissapointed, but I want more.

I like the waves plugins, and I love the UAD pultec as well. I think you may lose more than you gain by going in and out of the Layla 1 extra time. If you are going to do that I would look for a higher quality AD/DA with a good clock first.
