Ok so I have a Dell 667 meha hertz computer that I'm in process of stripping down and strictly using for some basic digital recording using Cakewalk software. I've read that in order to run more that one thing into my computer I need a mixer. so i'm looking at an Alesis Multimix 8 USB vs. a Behringer UB 1202FX. Does anyone have any idea as to which is better? Also, would I run my mixer through my line input on my computer or my USB?

What are you going to be recording?

You can use any mixer, and mix down to a stereo signal and run that into the line in of your PC. But you are pretty much stuck with the mix you made.

If you get mixed that uses USB, you can get mulitple tracks into your pC, but you will have latency issues if you want to re-track along with your already recorded tracks.

Firewire gets you multiple sources into your PC, and doesn't have latency issues, but is usually more expensive than either analog mixers or USB.

Avoid USB mixers. first of all, you only get to record in stereo. so all the mixer channels get mixed down into 2 mono channels and gets recorded into the computer. whereas a firewire mixer would have seperate tracks for recording.

Try to stay away from Behringer too. It's cheap but you get what you pay for.

Well, you can get a Behringer mixer if you're not gonna use the preamps(horrible) on it. Behringer's functionality ain't that bad. i have a UB1204fx and i haven't had any problems with it yet. it has been 1 year, however i don't dare to even use the pre's on it.
