hey im jack and i recently decided to dive into the unknown waters of recording, mostly vocals. im more or less looking for experienced opinions and a little advice along the way, fist off a couple days ago i bought an hp envy17 with the beats by dre soundcard on it, i have a beringer mixer and mic-phantom power i forget the model name, and bought an m-audio fast track usb interface, have the mic cord, and a tape to 1/8 cable..
i think im ready, right..?

To get the signal from the mic to the computer? Probably. To start making listenable recordings? That an entirely different story that none of us can answer at the moment.

I hate to throw the whole "you will only ever be as good as your monitoring chain allows you to be" thing, but I really hope that's the next purchase (should have been the first - by a long shot).

beats by dre soundcard

Oh geez...

Hello Jack. Welcome to the ZOO!

Talent ---> Mic---> XLR cable ---> interface with phantom power ---> USB cable ---> computer, Free reaper down loaded recording software.

This should be your recording routing.

And the playback routing is:

computer ---> usb cable ---> interface--->speakers (or headphones when tracking)
