Hey all! So my I tracked my band at the studio I work at the other night and I'm going to do all the overdubs and mixing at my house. In my rushing to get setup though I recorded everything in AIF, not that thats bad, but I know that WAVs would be easier to work with on my PC. I know Sonar can work with AIFs, because it says so, but when I go to import them into a blank session it says: "Unable to import wave file. The file's audio format is incompatable with the current project." Does anyone know how to make the project compatable with AIF? In the help section it say that you can import them and doesnt say anything about having to make the project compatable with the format. I really need some help, I dont know what Im going to do if I cant get these files into Sonar! THANKS!

AIF is an Apple format. Essentially it is Apple's version of a Wave file (which is Microsoft's format).

You shouldnt' have to do anything special to import an AIF. Make sure the file extension is .aif or .aiff; however I would suspect the problem is much more likely to be an issue with the bit rate and/or sample rate of the files themselves.

What bit rate and sample rate were they recorded at, and what is your sound card capable of? If your sound card is capable of the same specs as the files, then you probably just need to set those specs in Sonar (Options > Audio) and reprofile the card.

If it is not, you'll need to down-convert the files.

Or if you have an editor like Sound Forge or WaveLab you could convert them to wav. But I'm thinking dachay2tnr is probably right w/ the sample rate thing.

Hmm, Ive got the bit rate and sample rate right on the program and soundcard... Im wondering if there is one little setting somewhere that I dont know about or am not thinking of... Thanks for your help thus far guys!

I think it is a standard from Unix-land which Apple then adopted because they couldn't stand to adopt a MS standard...

I suggest trying a demo copy of Goldwave or Adobe Audition to do the conversion.

Q.

Ya, I guess I could do a conversion, but its like 3 hours worth of music that we still have to root through to find keepers, so I would be converting stuff that I wouldn't be using 2/3 of it! Its just really frustrating because I know that it should work!

So, before I go with the file conversions, does anyone have any final ideas on why the AIF files won't import over into Sonar? Also, when I do the conversions to WAV from AIF for the final mixing, what would be the best (ie highest quality) way to do that. Thanks so much for all your help thus far!

You never really said what the bit and sample rate of the files were, versus what your settings in Sonar are.

The message you are getting seems to imply this is the problem.

I have a all of the bit rate/sample rate settings correct as far as I can tell...

My point was that you never told us what the specs on the aif files are.

And, also what sound card are you using? Does it support 24 bit files?
