When you listen to a song in the clinic for critiquing purposes what do you listen to them through MOST of the time?

For me it is

80% of the time I listen through cheap headphones at work
20% on my home studio monitors

Mainly the same sony headphones I record with.

I listen a small percentage of the time through my pc speakers, but not everything sounds the way it should. The reason for that is I use my pc for gaming and have an audigy sound card on 5.1 surround speakers. Some stuff just comes through way to bass heavy with my sub on so headphones give me a better sound for critical listening.

The stuff from the clinic I like and download/burn to cd is listened to at work on a cheap boom box and on my car stereo. And when the wife isnt home on my home stereo through my old trusty infinity monitors. They are big and have an awesome sound. That gives my neighbors a chance to here you guys to.
:D

Often time I'm listening through small headphones at work, but I always make sure to say that in my reply. Cheap little headphones can often be VERY revealing, so I don't think it discredits the listen....it's a matter of knowing how a good mix should sound on little phones.

If I don't specifically say I'm on headphones, then I'm listening through my real monitoring rig. That's probably half of the time or more.

good reminder to mention the listening environment when critiquing (sp?) posts.

note to self.

i have many different environments:
1. sony closed back headphones (can't remember the model, mdr something?) from my home stereo.
2. Sharp home stereo with bass boost on in a room with 9 ft ceiliengs, plaster walls and an oak floor.
3. Alesis monitor Two's in a cement basement.
4. Aiwa car stereo.
5. (my latest environment) Sony 'street style' headphones connected to my pocket PC while running on a treadmill in a crowded health club.

Yup! Excellent point.... If you know how the cheap headphones sound and have listened to enough commerical, or other mixes on them, to know them......Then, there is no reason, why you can't use them for critique.

-Ministry Of Sound monitor headphones (no leakage in or out, my wifes loves 'm too)
-Videologic Sirocco speakers (da bomb, I actually like them better then most speakers in semi pro studios....those damned Yamahas for instance. Or is it blasphemy to say such things on this board? :o )

Sometimes I grab my Sennheiser HD565 Ovation if I need to hear tiny details....
