Hi guys,

This is a real newb question, and I really would like to hear your opinions on the matter. How important is a good sound card to your home audio P.C.(or Mac) based recording?

I'm looking to get a nice 8 channel firewire set up. But I'm really curious if i should be upgrading my standard HP audio card during the process. I mean its technically not in the recording chain It's just used for playback right?

Thanks,

Fair enough question, so no flaming....

You would not use your onboard sound card for playback. Use your firewire interface for everything. Disable the onboard soundcard in the CMOS thingy if you can.

Have fun.

Awesome thats the simple solution i was hoping to hear.

Thanks man,
I was always just confused by the real significance of sound cards.

The whole idea is that you are REPLACING the crappy onboard with 40cents worth of parts.

You will not use it at all. Just pretend it doesn't exist.

Before the wonders of Firewire and USB interfaces the interface would be a high end soundcard with a breakout box. I have and still use the MAudio OmniStudio. My mobile rig has an Echo Audiofire that actually has better AD/DA IMO. The wonders of technology.

When I first got into the new digital age about 5 years ago, this was a very confusing thing for me.

The light went on when somebody said your audio interface IS your soundcard. I thought the interface was where I'd plug my guitar and mic in, but playback would be throught the on board soundcard. When I realized that I plug my monitors (speakers) into the interface and disable the soundcard, it started to make more sense.

I still don't know why so many people use ASIO4ALL. I have never had a need to use more than 1 audio device. My interface works for tracking, playing back my DAW as well as all other computer things like gaming, itunes, windows media player, youtube, audio from the **** sites. It all works fine out of my interface.
