iMac Recording

I'm reading some of these threads and realize most of you are into this stuff big-time... You'll probably be rolling in the aisle at my efforts, but... I want to start into some HR and plan to use my iMac. Yes, I said iMac. (I can hear the groans from the die-hards) It's what we have and I can't afford to start over. Hope there's someone that's had some experience on recording with a Mac to nudge me in the right direction. It's a 400mhz DV model. I know I need to get a MIDI controller (that's just a keyboard, right?) and I've looked at Cakewalk and Cubasis demos and I'm leaning towards Cakewalk-- I was really lost in Cubasis... at least with Cakewalk I got it to make some noise almost from the get-go. I also want to record my acoustic guitar and lay some vocals in. Just a microphone or something else? What if I want to bring in analog from a cassette deck, is that a different software than Cakewalk to convert the sound to something else?

There is an excellant artical in 'Future Music" December issue on just this subject(pg 94)it includes software and hardware options, etc. very good articale (and mag!!!) I highly suggest you check it out....!!peace!!!!

In cause you cant find the mag., here is a brief review...
Steinberg Cubase VST or Emagic Logic Audio (I would go for the platnum version) This covers your recording and sequencing & mixing needs....Then, the following software was reccomended...Native Instruments "Reaktor" (www.native-instruments.de)which is a soft synth, Steinberg "Rebirth" (also soft syth), Prosoniq Orange Vocoder (www.prosoniq.com) effects plug in's, & Prosoniq sonicWORX, sample editor, Bais "Peak" (www.baias-inc.com)which is a wave form editor (rather expensive) for your finial mixing, and Adaptec "Toast",cd burning software.....Hardware check out Swissonic USB Studio D (alt to internal sound card)www.swissonic.com, and Tascam's new US428 usb digital recorder and mixer. Hope this helps, by the way you can "hear" or download trial programs for most of what is listed, the Reator and Orange Vocoder sound really awesome!!!! I gave you the web addresses for those that are not so easy to find, I live in Hong Kong now, where real chinese food is hard to find!!!!!!!

BB-- I appreciate the synopsis (I haven't had a chance to look for the Future Music mag)-- But, geez... a guy could go broke for wanting all this equipment and software...I'll have to go in phases and hope my wife doesn't kill me!
