Does anyone know if a stock imac 266 G3 with 160mg of ram could be used or integrated in to a hard disk multi-track recording
set up?

Why waste all that money on a 266 imac? Even a 1Ghz G4 is struggling in my studio. Anyway you may rather get a better setup for the same price in PC. Good Luck!

I was curious because I already own the imac and am looking at a new PC for household use, I thought I may be able to use my
imac in a home studio set up rather than trash it. I really only need 16 tracks of 44.1K sampling, but you are right in that if it's going to cost me a bundle for software and a USB controller it's
not worth it. For referance I'm using a Tascam 788 for my home rehersal studio now. When I seriously record I go into a big studio and leave the engineering to the pros.

Thanks

It would be a struggle, but if you do not expect to use very many plugins, it can be done. You will need more ram, but it is very cheap now - get as much as will fit into the computer.

Try to find an old version of ProTools Free, that will run in OS9.2.2. The latest recording software depends on a much faster computer.

You will be able to record 2 tracks at a time, and you might just be able to accumulate 16 tracks if you are very parsimonious with the plugs.

I used to run PTFree on my G3iMac 450mHz, and I am sure I had more than 16 tracks and no performance problems at all, using the Mac's built in sound card.

You will soon become addicted to recording by yourself, and will want more though!
