i just got a computer for recording

but ive been recording to tape for so long i dont know how to do this ie: what i need to start

i would prefer to just have an external mixer plugged into a nice soundcard and record to the computer that way, but i dont know if i can do that

i dont know what kind of soundcard i have now...but its pretty standard

i have my tascam plugged in right now to put songs from tape to computer but thats all ive used it so

so basically can i do what i want with the mixer, which soundcard should i get (if any) and what program should i use (a simple one please) to record the tracks to the computer

i know this is probabally very vague, but i dont know much about the subject...if you need anymore info to help answer my question just ask and ill try to find out

thanks a lot

How many tracks will you be recording at one time ? Also what mixer do you have and also what other equipment do you have ?

just search under my name, include powertracks, cad, delta, yamaha.
i posted tons of info on this.
would help to know your pc config and as dano said what else you have now.

What Meastro seeks is info on what you plan to connect to the pc. More specificly, how much tracks you want to record at the same time, and if you are going to use analog or digital connections to your pc. The reason is to check if you need a soundcard, and if yes, what type to get.

For the software, the same applies. You say you are going to use the mixer, but not exactly "how". are you going to use the mixer as a kind of multit-track preamp, recording to the pc and do your mixing on the pc, or are you going to record multi-track on the pc, and later mix on the pc with the pc playing back the multi-track (and recording the result), or are you going to do your mixing directly to stereo and record that, just cleaning up a bit on the pc? A bit more info on your intended way to work would be useful.

well im using my tascam 424mkIII as a mixer only for these next 2 weeks though

im using the mixer so i can plug in my mics i use about 4 at a time at the most thats why i want the mixer

im only recording up to 2 tracks at a time
its like a one man band thing, but i play a bunch of instruments and use them all

so i use about 10 to 12 tracks per song

i planned to just keep the tascam hooked up to the computer for right now and use the mixer that way until i get my new one

and manning1 i got your message before about powertracks and i e-mailed me back and it sounded like a great product i just wanted to weigh out with options

i hope thats enough guys thanks for all the help so far
