I have a Firebox with a Tubepre for a bit of effect and for DI bass/elec. guitar. I want a clean pre to record acoustic guitar and maybe voice (narraration, vocal). DMP3 is highly regarded for $159.00 with 2 channels. The Rane MS1b is around $140.00 for one channel (No DI). I rarely record in stereo...but you never know. If I pile a bunch of acoustic tracks (I will not be recording my drums anytime soon.....and when I do, I'll get a new input device like Mackie Onyx of Firepod, Fireface, etc with more inputs) I can have one or two channels of clean pre's (DMP3 or Rane), One channel of Tube Pre and 2 channels of Firebox. I've heard great things about the DMP3 and MS1b. Also, would the FMR RNP be a major upgrade from the two above pre's I mentioned? Please give info. If you have any mp3 samples of above pre's, please post. Oh by the way I have ADK A-51, Audix I-5, ADK sc-1 small condensor. Here's a link to one of my compositions using the Firebox, Tubepre (plus ADK a-51) and recording into Logic Pro 6 Click here to listen

In sparse mixes I think acou guit almost always sounds better when recorded in stereo--especially for fingerpicking stuff. The DMP3 definitely excells on acou guit, but if you only want one channel, those who have heard both pres generally think the Rane is a little better.

I have all three. the rane I use on snare drum and the dmp3 I use on snare bottom and room mic. they're both similar, I'd go with the dmp3 for the reasons staed above. you definetly need a stereo pre in the event you record an acoustic guit. the Rane isnt noticably better in comparison to sacrifice a 2nd channel!

the RNP however is a step above both. I use it for my drum overhead, backing vocals, stereo accoustic, etc. anything more critical and clean. (my great river ME-1NV gets all the heavy duty work!..but I do like the RNP very much. it is quite a bit more however!

Great info. I'm wondering if I should just wait to save for the RNP and just use my firbox or tubepre pre's for now. I've heard that some producers have a DMP3 handy for portibility. But, it sounds that the RNP will always have a place in the studio no matter how expensive my pre's get. I'll probably lean toward the DMP3. I'm not thrilled with the Firebox Pre's although they are OK. Actually, my old Mbox pre's (focusrite) seemed a bit better.

I may just waith and pay $475.00 for the RNP. All the recording boards rave about this thing. The DMP3 is a close second (a lot cheaper)..but..I'm not certain it will be much of an upgrade over my buit in Firebox pre's

The Rane DMS22 is a two channel pre, with two of the MS-1b preamps, plus 3 bands of eq (one parametric) per channel plus a stereo mix bus, in a one rack space. They show up on eBay occasionally for about $150 or so. Nice sounding, versatile unit.

I've heard that rane is good....but...I would like to hear one in person. I've listened to a DMP3 (very good).

For $140 or whatever, I'd grab a DMP3 now and then start the RNP fund drive.

the DMP3 from what i have heard and seen is very good value for money.
