Alchuck, thank you for your concern I need all I can get! I have a feeling my sound card isnt even full duplex. I am concerned about what you mentioned that cheap sound card inputs suck, is there a good (inexpensive) card I can get that will go in to a HP pavillion? Thank you

Hey there,

You've probably got a riptide soundcard in your pavillion. I have one, it is full duplex and is capable of recording at 16 bit, 48k. It is by no means a good card, but shouldn't keep you from getting started. I'll let the other folks talk to you about what to replace it with...

Probably will handle any midi i/o as well, which is something you wouldn't need on an upgrade. I would think that just about anything out there would fit into your HP, but if you are unsure, always check with the manufacturer before committing.

I have an HP Pavilion, been recording on it for a few months. It is full duplex and is all you need to get started. I recently purchased a Monster Sound MX400 for about $50.00 - a HUGE improvement. Not a lot of features, but a big difference in sound quality. If, like me, you're just getting started and only record 1 instrument at a time, I think it's worth looking into. Good luck.

Shem,

I think in your other thread you mentioned you have a Sound Blaster Live? That is a full duplex card.

The mic preamps on all inexpensive sound cards are going to be bad. You need to get an external preamp or direct box (anywhere from $50 to $100 and beyond) or a small mixer like the Behringer MX802A (around $120) or the cheapest Mackie (around $300). OR spend a lot more for a audio interface that has decent preamps built in to it, like the Delta 44 or 66 + Omni i/o, or the Aardvark DirectPro, or the SeaSound SoloEX, or the Digi001, or the Echo Mona... the cheapest of these is on the order of $500.

Good luck!
