ok... what I am going for is a weezer, everclear, queen, white stripes distorted guitar sound. I want distortion, but I don't want it overwhelming and harsh... I want it smooth... and I want it to blend nicely like the bands I listed.

here's what I did:
1.put a shure sm57 right up on the grill, angled off from the right side inward (of a cabinet)
2.the whole cab is on a wooden chair
3.adjusted the amp to get the distortion to what I wanted, remembering to keep the distortion lower than normal and turn the volume up on the amp
4.turned the low down a bit to leave room for bass and kick drum
5.the room is pretty dead

then I recorded the sonofabitch... double tracked it and applied minimal EQ.

what can I do to improve this sound? do you have any recommendations? or is it ok how it is? thank you for listening.

yes... try it again? maybe it wasn't fully uploaded when I posted.

There's something in the low end that comes across as boomy and overly resonant on my system. Maybe some high-pass could help.

i have a feeling you'll need less distorion.....well at least for queen type stuff. and i dunno......i'm sure you're not going for an exact queen replica, but whatever type of distortion your using seems to sizzly for a brian may type tone.

actually the riff seems a little rush inspired. if it was sped up a bit and a little more technical, it would be more than a little rush inspired.

i agree with mattamatta it does seem kinda weird and boomy.

I think I found the source of the problem as to why it sounded boomy and was lacking depth... mic placement and the type of amp. I'm going to try a different amp tomorrow... unfortunately I broke my A string on the guitar I was using.
