One Hit Wonder
Of course, that simply means I'll probably only remix it every other day, instead of every day! :D

Anyway, I posted this song a couple of weeks ago, and got pretty good feedback on where the problems were. So. . . now I've made most of the changes that were recommended and I am ready to call it a finished mix. Tell me Inspectors 18, can I call it quits?? Or is it still lacking in some essential nutrient?

Once again, my personal thanks to our own ChuckU for providing the horn parts. The live horns are probably the biggest improvement from the original version.

At this point, I'm decidedly interested in your comments regarding the volume relationships. Vocals too loud? Too low? Guitar to loud? etc. etc. Thanks.

Mike

Sounds pretty damn polished. Don't mix yourself to death... That in one breath, and perhaps the lead vox could come down 1-2db.
The horns are sweet daddy-0.

Haven't heard the original.

I love the soaked acoustics...

-Jett

Ok lets see.......bass sounds good, nice definition.....vocals blend well.......good rythm guitar.......nice harmonies.....horn part sounds synthy.....good tune BTW......very nice vocal sound.....drums could come up a little.......tambourine is happenin' (where's the cowbell :D ).....nice ending....oooooh...horn section sounds pretty good, a lot better than the solo horn part. Very nice man!

Nice job Mike. I agree, Don't mix your self to death. Sound good the way it is. Well, maybe a remix every four or five days would be O.K.:D :D :D

I think your mix sounds pretty good to my ear. I hear a few other problems too (12 string on the Bm7 sounds a bit out and a couple of fills were loose) but they're minor. Great vocals my friend.

Like Good Coffee

Ba da da da da da da...

Full, rich, harmonic...cool.

Yeah, you're done. Excellent work. You took your time with this, and it shows. I didn't get to hear the original, but this sounds great to me. Your voice has a James Taylor-ish quality to it in places. I love that.

Nice job,
-chris

I remember the original,I liked it then but this is that much better.
Vocals sound perfect to me!

You have a really fine vocal sound.

Keys sound much better, and the horn is the nuts!

Nice mello stuff,well done.

Best to you,
Pete

OK, it's been 24 hours and I haven't remixed this song even once. And <twitch> the dry mouth and cold sweats are only mildly <twitch> distracting.

Thanks for all the good feedback. guys. I'm glad you liked it, and I appreciate your taking the time to listen.

jett - you really think the lead vox are a bit loud? I was worried that the instruments might be overpowing the vocals.

Lt. - the cowbell is in the trunk with the wood block. Hmmmm... maybe I can bring them both in on the next remix. <must.. control.. myself>

Flash - I'll try and take your advice.

Track Rat - the friggin' guitar has 12 strings. You can't expect them ALL to be in tune, can you? I figure if I get half of them in tune it's close enough for rock and roll. Just don't listen to the ones you don't like. :D

chris - not me singing (at least not the lead). I'm doing one of the backing vocal parts and playing the guitar. I'll pass on your comment to the singer, though. Thanks.

muze - If you remember the original, you must be almost as old as me. :)

While it's here...

I just wanted to (very VERY respectfully) disagree with Jett's opinion on the vox. They sound fine level-wise. Not that my opinion should carry any weight dachay; I'm just putting in my vote because you sound like you need some input/ reassurance on this one. The way I "test" a vocal is to see if I can make out (literally) 95% of the words. I ran the test on this tune, and it passed with flying colors.

Not too loud, not too soft....JUUUUUUST RIGHT.

:D

I'd say it is a finished mix when YOU are happy with it. Leave it for a couple weeks...a month or so....come back, and you'll hear the stuff everyone (and maybe myself) might/would suggest to change. Sure, there is some stuff I'd change (like ditching the keyboard sound, tuning the 12 strings, and making the bass a little more "natural" sounding, stereo-izing the bg vocals, vary the sounds thruout the production, putting the horns in the 'same room', mixwise.....etc, etc) But, DON"T touch that "Telestar" sound at 2:00+....!!! A little more "spiffy-ness" in the tempo department might also help to get rid of the "drags" and make the timing a little more tight, and pep things up too.

nice retro song (writing wise). I like that...and I'm sure my wife would love it too.

Ooohhh. That hurts, General Bob.:(

Mike, I'm willing to double the single horn if you want to mix it again.

Sorry....ya' know after I posted that, I saw where it was a real horn and I went back and listened to it again and it still sounded that way to me. But you know Mp3 encoding screws with things and maybe that's why. or it could even be my 'puter speakers. Or, of course, it could have something to do with mics or whatnot. The section parts sound real and I did say that in my post....so I have no idea why the single lines would sound that way. BTW.....I have some blues collaborations in the early stages. If you would be interested in doing some brass to go along with my sax parts....PM me. I have some songs that you might have fun with.

Ah, words of wisdom, mixmkr. That is usually around the time I realize everything sucks, and that I have absolutely no talent whatsoever (musically or engineering-wise), and I want to sell all my gear and call my ex-wife to tell her that she was right and I am an asshole. Then I remember I have gin in the cabinet and ice in the fridge, and everything seems OK again. :)

BTW, I didn't write this. It's a cover of a late 60's song (guess that's why it sounds retro.)

Mike, I'm willing to double the single horn if you want to mix it again.
Chuck, I'm fine with the horns as is. But as I told you, you need to be happy. What's YOUR pleasure?

I have some songs that you might have fun with.
Stay away from my horn guy, Lt. :)

you sound like you need some input/ reassurance on this one
Not really, Chris. I actually thought the instruments might be overpowering the vox, and was surprised at jett's comment.

damn, thats a pimp mix...

vocals are a tad bit loud though...the lead at least.

i agree that the vocals could go down the slightest touch, but that is probably the only thing i could suggest, and that suggestion is just being nit-picky.....in other words, they could be lower, but they don't distract as is.........good job

Awesome tune. Love the mellow feel.

The vox, in my opinion are in the right space. The synthy horns are funky sounding. Can you re-do them with a different sound?

Listening again...

You must lose the horn and string sounds. They bring the song down- a little. The arrangement is good, it's just the sounds themselves. I'm totally into the song, thats why I implore you to try a different approach. Look for something weird on your keyboard and play the same lines.

That said-- the mix is very good, wouldn't change a thing.

Nice job,

Jon

In short, this mix smells done to me ;)

Very nide rendition, levels and everything else sounds just right on both monitors and headphones. The horns are the icing on the cake.

Denis

not bad.... hard to say mix wise ... I like the space and clarity of it... levels seem pretty good too...

but it's not finished to me for performance reasons... but I might be too hard... :) ...

I got a kick out of people saying the horns are synthy.... :D too funny ... ChuckU ... you played too smooth I guess or something... :D

cheers

Chuck - I'll let you fight it out over the horns. I have other issues to deal with. :D

shack, powder, jjt, dog - thanks for the feedback. I listened to this mix on a couple of different systems today, and on one the lead vox did sound too forward. So I'm back to mixing it again. (I was having trouble handling the withdrawals anyway.)

Fed - spit it out. Where's the performance issues? Gits, vox, drums, horns :) , all of the above, (the rest are synths).
