This a recording I'm doing for a friend of a friend. It's a cover of a Uriah Heep tune (post Ken Hensley) that they want to submit to a Heep tribute album. I'd never heard this one before and didn't like it when I did hear it. I've been working on it too long now and my ears are fried. I hate the guitar but have to live with it as they have to send it by Tuesday so there's no recutting it. Listen and point out what I CAN tweak.
It's called Sell Your Soul.

Site never loads here. Will try later.

Edit

Working now, d/l'ing.

Check the highs in the intro man.......

the lead vox needs to come out more.........

bass is a little buried as well.......

guit heavy I would say...........

I suppose that is the way it's supposed to be......

super good job on the drum kit....I like :)
the crash needs a little more warmth though.......

check it again tomorrow after your ears are rested.........

nothin' like "virgin morning ears" to get a good bearing......

take it easy man....
Joe

my ears are fried too...:(

but it sounds like the gtr on the left side...the main rhy one...needs to get out of the way of everything else sonically... even though it is the driving force of the tune. I'd maybe split it and pan it extreme and open up some room in the middle. Just a first thought...

oh....the positive stuff:)

nice room sound on the drums...and the rest of the recording quality seems pretty good...cranked in the headphones, that is.

The primary rhythm guitar needs something. More life. Can you pan it more? Double it and pan it?

The bass guitar is lost in parts.

Drums sound good for the most part, dig the toms in the break.

The lead guitars could be panned moreso.

Man that singer has good pitch! The part at 3:46 made me laugh, good thing.

I guess to me, it sounds too mono. In particuliar the guitars. I guess this was the drummers best take since the mistake at 00:15 was left in, or does he need another tom? :)

Cool stuff!

aint that the truth. If I could have those "virgin" ears all day long, I'd be killer (I think:rolleyes: )

kinda like that doobie at 5am....eh? missing that exit on the highway.....

it's happened.......a couple of times because I was getting my knob polished by my passenger...............ahhhhhhhh.....
sweet memories :D

I definately appriciate the listen gentlemen. I'll take one more stab at this one in the morning (even though I feel if I hear this thing one more time I'm gonna go postal).

Sounds good over here. My only suggestions may be to raise the vox a bit and maybe bring the bass out a bit (it seems kind of buried) ... the drums sound good, and the actual recording sounds great!

Of course, this is all listened to in lo-fi, so it probably doesn't count for much. :)

Excellent recording! :)

sounds pretty good..........the drums sound a tad hollow, could use a little more power.......the lead vocals need a little more volume...........i'd say that's about it............nice work

I am a HUGE fan of Uriah Heep's early recordings...Find the song " time to live " and youll see where Im coming from

it depends how you want to look at this.

This is a VERY modern sound for a band like the Heep

It could use some more tremolo/univibe/leslie stuff, but I think you have really done a good job of portraying a modern version of Heep..I am betting this band REALLY had an idea in mind of how they wanted this to sound...seems like they helped do this by playing a certain way

All in all A KILLER job I think

It could use a little more " mush " and less definition all around to REALLY be true to the old stuff, but that would be blasphemy in this day and age of treble deaf compressor crazy consumers

This mix is identical to a lot of bands from this genre in the late 70's early 80's.The only difference would be the mastering job that brought them to life just a little bit more....this is good mix as is.

Today most people would shoot for a little more definition especially on the main rhythm guitar.Thats easier said than done with all thats going on in this tune though and you have to work with the track that you have.....are those backing vocals or some type of synth thing?Organ?

The drums are sounding killer.....the lead guitar is cutting through just where it should be to my ears.

The vocals need a little more presence.........maybe just a volume thing.Im sure you'll get that fixed with ease once your ears have rested.

The singer is damn good....oh yeah, like the ride cymbal after the solo.

Sounds really good Track Rat.You're at the edge of a final mix man.

sounds real good track rat. You've got some good advice-I would agree to bring up the vox a bit more-hes a good singer and sounds like a good performance-why not? I like the idea of doubling the guitar and panning to both sides-or maybe guitar hard to one side and the organ hard to the other. It does sound a little mono-ish. Drums sound real good. Good band by the way.

I agree with this 110%

ok T.R... get the salt lick handy ;) ... (a GRAIN wouldn't be enough ;))... (heard on Event 20/20s in semi-treated room)

Ah... nice STYX/BOSTON feel...

Certain snare hits in the intro get buried...

After 0:40, why is that rhythm guitar panned so close to center, where the solo guitar sits? imnsho, it's getting eaten up.

Vocal is a tad buried...

Needs more bass... this song needs that low "chin"... like a lantern-jaw... it's "slack-jawed" in the bass dept. :)

BGVs sound lovely (hard panned/doubled/delayed)...

Do the solos and snare drum compete for space? Can't tell...

A slight high-end boost might help on the master EQ (but it would piss off pipelineaudio  )

Very cool arrangement near 3:40... where drums, bass & keys are soloed.

What's with the low 200's on snare? Sounds just a tiny bit BOXY somewhere near 220Hz (1.5 db?)

Gotta say... what a HELLUVA drummer... wonder if he'd mind learning/recording my insanely programmed drum trax :p

------
Very cool song, TR... Everything is recorded cleanly... so this review is of the super-picky type

Yeah, with Track Rat's stuff all you can be is nit picky. :D

I agree with the others that the guitar could be split and panned out a bit to make more room - that the bass could be punched a bit more... I guess if you took those to heart you'd have to boost the vox also to make em come through though - damn, isn't it a bitch. ;)

Sounds good as is though - let your ears rest a bit & it'll come out alright.

Oh, a question: is there a keyboard back there somewhere in the mix? I think I'm hearing one, but it could just be phantom harmonics. See man, I'm not even sure what I'm hearing... what the hell am I doing posting to this thread????

Good job. :D

PS... Keys: yeah, that's what you get for posting before you've finished listening to the tune... Yeah, maybe they could be boosted a bit?

My only excuse for this post is that my ears are fried too.

Nice job Track. Now this is Rock&Roll, a very good band and a very good engineer. Sounds great...

I thank all of you very much. I agree with the comments on the bass and rhythm guitars especially. The bass I'll tweak on a bit more but I'm stuck with the rhythm guitar as there's no time to cut an additional one to pan. I'm going to throw a couple of very short delays on it and pan them out. This story is getting better. I think I just stole the singer and the drummer out of this band to start a new one with me.

hey Track, I'm useless in the critique department, so I'll just tell you what I thought when I heard it..

the sound of this song reminds me of later Sabbath, (after Ozzy got kicked out).. and it also reminds me of some Deep Purple.. both good things.. It has a similar sound to 'the mob rules' or 'Heaven and Hell' albums.. even 'Seventh Star'.. very cool stuff! The singer is very good, and so is the drummer.. (although I thought I heard a drum clam or two.)

I may have to check out some Uriah Heep.. cool stuff!

I love that part at 2 minutes etc...

-EDIT- I just read you stole the drummer and singer, cool! :D
