It's been a long dry spell. I'd like to thank joro for helping me get thru it. He and I have been talking about a collab, and just getting his demo track, and fooling around with it got my juices flowing.

So here's another Tamara Evans poem, from her little book that she left with me. If you can remember, "Home of the free", which I had up for a while last fall, was one of her poems about 9/11. Man this lady has issues. Most of the poems are very dark. I have no idea where she's coming from, and don't know anything about her past, but I think I pulled this one off, as to the feeling of the words.

....Michael Kelly acoustic, miced with a 603s over the shoulder(no effects), and also picking up thru a v67 that I sing thru using some compression and some effects (chorus, reverb), double tracked and sent up the middle, background vocals thru the v67(with same effects) panned a little off center, Michael Kelly mandolin thru the v67(no effects) and panned a little off center. Overall mix compressed a little bit, and a bit of EQ on all the tracks, as to even out the lows and highs, especially the vocals and mandolin.

"this child of mine"

enjoy,

Dan

PS., I forgot to mention that I do have Tamara's blessing and permission to use her poems.

I think this is an excellent piece

Very good lament. I do have issues with the mandolin. It sounds a bit out of tune(but then, don't they ussually:D ). I think the piece would be stronger without the mandolin.

The song is a reflexive piece, solo feelings with touches of memories(provided by the harmony). I think you might listen to this same mix, but drop out the mandolin.

Either way, I think you did great with this.

thanks sloop, and yes, I'll do that, give it a try without the mando.

Hi Dan,
Good tune man...
I don't agree with dropping the Mando but do think a bass track and perhaps a lap steel or pedal steel would be really cool....maybe a little fiddle too...

I would also suggest a dryer vox track...the harmony is cool with the verb though...very cool..

I like the tone of your vocal man...lots of emotion there...ya know?

Be well my friend,
Joe

Hi Dan. I vote to keep the mando! I'd cut a little low end on that vocal. I think it's causing some mud in there. Real purty song!

hey dudes, yea, the mando stays. I took a listen w/o mando and it needs to be there. Sorry sloop. Maybe I'll get her in tune too. LOL. And the vocal effects, well it's like you have to try stuff to see if it's working. And if my man Perry Dog will quit taking his bass home I'll be able to bass it up. I like the suggestions on fiddle and steel. I think I'll ask mississippi to try a fiddle track. Anyway, I have some time for this one. It needs to be finished around Thanksgiving, so I can give it to Tamara.

thanks fellows,

Dan

great

HI Dan. Firstly I`m digging the mandolin. The vocal is good and the guitar is nicely arranged. I like the doubled vocal parts alot. I think its really cool that you took a poem and made music around it. Well done.

thanks Coop. This lady left her "poem book" with me 2 years ago. This tune, once I'm satisfied with it, will be the 2nd from her book, and she gets to listen at their X-mas gathering just after Thanksgiving. She crys. I have found that when I'm running a little dry with my own tunz, I can pull out this little book and get sumpin working, which has always gotten my juices flowing again. Since I started this little demo about two weeks ago, I've gotten one of my tunz in gear and have just about finished it, and I'm working on another new one. So it has helped me alot. Are your cds ready yet? I'll keep checking back. I really want a set when you are ready. (as in I want to buy a set).

thanks.

Dan

Dan! OMG!:D

Don't listen to sloop, he doesn't know what he's talking about, that mandolin sounds great.

3:23-3:30 didn't go too smooth though.

Your vocs and doubling the vocs sounded great.

Wow really nice song!

Hi Dan

Dan Here:

The lyrics are first-rate, so they mate VERY well to the music.
I like your voice, you sure fit this into the modern blue-grass thing, if there is such a thing.
It feels like blue-grass to me.
Well done young fella!!!!

Dan

rats, thanks my friend. and yea, I've been know to fuck up a good take missing a chord, or sumpin like that. he he he he. Maybe I'll nail it before I print this tune.

Dan, this is Dan, glad to meet you Dan, and thanks for the comments. I guess all my tunz are bluegrass influenced, after 20 some years of bluegrass gigging. It would be hard not to hear this. Tamara Evans' little poem book is chock full of lines like these. I plan to do a few more in the future.

Thanks for the listen, and comemts folks.

It's just a suggestion.:D Sometimes less is more--you never know till you try it ;)

Nice job Dan. I thought you did an excellent job putting this poem to music. It seemed to fit just right in feel, emotion, etc.

I really enjoyed this.

I might back off on the FX some. Are they printed to disk this way? Sounds like it reading your first post. If not, I would make sure you are blending a dry track with your wet one. I also might mess with those settings.

Great work.

I look forward to your collab with Joro...

although he is a pain in the ass to work with  :D

sloop, your exactly correct. you gota try stuff.

skids, thanks. and no I still have the tracks. but this is still just a demo of sorts. working out the kinks. I'll be tracking this tune again for sure. that's why we come here isn't it? to get a feeling what other ears think. yea, if joro and I can get his tune together, it'll be a good little project. looking forward to it.

thanks for the listen,

Dan

This is excellent!

Glad you kept the mando in there, it really adds so much to the tune. This has a very warm, almost analog feel to it (not sure what you're recording on)

I love the vocal work on here. You do an excellent job of bringing these words to life.

I have nothing bad to say about this...though a bit of steel guitar in there might be kind of cool.

Excellent job, dtb!

:D

Hey Dan,
Great to hear from you!

Everybody around here seems to be in a dry spell,(including me!):D

Fine job putting the poem to music.
I'm trying to do the same thing with one of my wife's poems, tougher than I thought!

That's a really nice sounding guitar you have there.
Records great.
The mando is sweet, and your voice makes the tune as always.

Your recordings always amaze me,with just a couple of instruments and vocals, they sound as good as any full blown production.

Great stuff,
Pete

Hey Dan,
.beautiful tune here man.:) You interpret her words very nicely. I love your voice in your stuff. A little bit of hiss in there... but no big deal. Very nice work here Dan.

boydrj, thanks fellow, I enjoyed this one too. I use a Tascam 788 recorder, and I think maybe the effects, and mixdown to standalone cd recorder keeps me in the analog world.

Pete, thanks alot. This happens for me a lot. It's like I can't get nothing down (or satisfied with) for months, and then all of a sudden shit just flows. Joe (joro) and I are kinda working on a little sumpin, and working with his scratch track just got the juices going. I hope it lasts a while. he he he he

g, thanks again. I believe the hiss is from the effects. I've been trying different effects with my vocals to see how they work out. Some are ok, and some really suck. But I guess if you don't try you'll never find the ok ones. LOL

Thanks again guys, for the listen. Glad you enjoyed this one. I plan to try a full production of this tune.

Dan

Something in there almost sounds like a cricket choir, backing you up Dan :)

Great changes Dan. Very sweet... has that quality that pulls you in and keeps your interest.

Sounds like a candidate for another HR.COMP ;)

Love ya, Dan... the love and beers are waiting ... Aug 2004!! :D
