basically, im using reason 3.0, with cubase sx and a tascam interface. the problem im getting is that when recording i keep getting skips in the signal! i tried altering the buffer and latency, and although the skips have become less frequent, its still there. its a pretty decent laptop!! and i never get this problem when recording on my desktop! maybe i need a new soundcard?!?

any ideas?

thanks

Infact u do need a new soundcard....what is the current soundcard ur using? the skips in the signal is a latency issue..and by decreasing the buffer and latency on a crappy card, there will be crackles in the audio.

can anyone recommend a decent soundcard for a laptop? preferably a cheap one?

Skips on a laptop are often based on the fact that internal laptop harddrives are usually very slow (4k or 5k rpm). This is because laptops are most often run by businessmen who do not need blazing performance, just long battery life - and battery life is the biggest selling point for laptops.

Three words: External Firewire Harddrive.

I use a Glyph GT050 80Gb and have not regretted every penny I spent on it ($200). It's wickedly fast, dead silent and with the optional rack ears sits below my racked Motu828mkII with zero desk footprint.

Whats ur budget? U should go for firewire audio interfaces..they are really fast and realiable..try MOTU 828.
