I'm an interface Newwb!!!

I just received my TASCAM US800 that I'm buying off Jimmy. I have everything hooked up and it's running and recording beautifully.

FYI, I'm using Windows XP with REAPER and I have no problems with it. I'm excited to start recording something.

Couple of questions:

1) I've never recorded straight into my computer. I've always recorded on a stand-alone and then brought the files into REAPER to mix. Is it normal to get a slight bit of latency no matter how small I make the "latency" button. I have it at 192 and I still hear a very slight delay when I talk into a mic. I can still work with it, but I don't know if it's poosible to have zero latency.

2) Not really a US800 question, but I can't figure this out. How do I get a guitar tuner plug-in to work? I have guitar going in, I hear it, I see it. I have a guitar tuner plug-in inserted into that channel, but I can't get the guitar tuner to work. I tried it with REAPER stopped, playing, and recording. Neither of them seems to engage the tuner.

I'm sure I'll have a few more "recording straight into the computer" questions.

Thanx

Rami, I probably can't help with Q.2, but the answer to Q.1 is yes.

There will always be some amount of latency. The analog to digital conversion itself takes an amount of time, plus whatever the minimum processing time of your software is.

If I'm tracking I set the buffer size to 128. I find the result close enough that I know latency is there, but it wouldn't ever put me off.

About Q.2. What plug are you using? Maybe someone else has it too.

Hope that helps.

Zero latency is almost impossible, unless you use direct monitoring. The more inserted effects you have going, while monitoring through your DAW, the more latency you will get. Depending on what your computer specs are, and what else you are running on it, will make a huge difference. With my 'recording only' I7 that is optimized for recording, I can have 40+ tracks with countless effects and guit sims running, and still record tracks with unnoticeable latency.

What are your specs, and do you have it optimized for recording?

As far as the tuner thing, that sounds more like a Reaper question. I'm not familiar with that.

Welcome to the interface jungle Rami! :D

Thanx a lot guys. Steen, the US800 doesn't give me an option of 128 buffering. The lowest it goes is 192. But, like I said, it's not that bad.

Jimmy, I was looking for a thread or post that I remember seeing about optimizing for recording. You got a link for that somewhere?

Thanx again man.

There are a bunch of them. Search Google for 'optimize (insert Windows version) for recording audio'. I remember one from Presonus that was quite clear in the instructions. They all pretty much give the same basic instructions.

Here is the other one I was looking for.

Thanx man. Read both quickly and went with the instructions of the first link. Looks like it helped. Now the latency sounds like a slight flange as opposed to a slap back delay.

Thanx!

I used to get annoying latency, but when I switched to a new much faster computer the latency became so short it was negligible

Can you monitor directly?? Meaning input goes straight to the headphone mix. You probably won't have any effects in your foldback audio, but that's not a big issue once you get used to it.

I'll be going down this path sometime soon I expect... will watch your travails with interest! :D

There is a monitor mix knob on the 800, so yes, you can mix the direct signal with the output from DAW for 0 latency.

You mean in the control panel or on the actual unit? I'm not home right now, so I can't check, but I'm curious.
Actually, I'd have to get a headphone amp to do that. I noticed that the headphone signal straight out of the us800 is very weak.

Yes. Second knob from the left on the unit. And yes, the headphone output isn't very hot. A headphone amp would be very helpful, especially for us deaf drummers. :)

Shit, you may be right man. I thought it was a monitor mix knob. Let me know. :) I think you may be able to do it from the Tascam control panel tho.
