Hey guys, I am new at this and Im trying to learn. But what exactly is S/PDIF. I have it on my soundcard, and if it's better than using the regular input on it, I want to use it then.

Will it go into a mackie board? Because thats what I have.

Thanks

An S/PDIF is a stereo digital port. Its used to transfer digital audio data without having to convert it back to an analog audio signal first. The initials stand for Sony/Philips Digital Interface.

Which Mackie board do you mean? They might have some digital boards but I don't know of any.

What do you have, a D8B? I believe they have an AES/EBU in and out but if you have ANY of their lesser boards they're only equiped with analog ins and outs. Don't be decieved by the RCA connectors.

I have a 4 or 5 year old 16 channel mackie board. Im really not sure on the model number, because it's in another location. Im guessing since it's old it wouldnt have S/PDIF.

It's a safe bet it won't be equiped with S/PDIF.

If you don't know what sort of signal is coming out of that RCA jack how about hooking it up to an analog input, turning the gain way down and sweeping the input volume pot while playing back the track.
This should separate the digital from the analog!
