I've been using vegas pro lately as my multitrack recording software, and while I am happy to use it for recording , I hate using the effects on it.

THey are totally crap.

Every single directX fx that I have used has made my music sound worse.

compression is terrible,
delay sounds bad
even a simple reverb is unworkable and sounds sooo fake.
the eq sounds horrible

Anyhow, save your money and don't buy sonic foundry plugins,
save your music and don't use what u already have

Hey! I didn't get a reverb plug-in with my copy of Vegas. Did you buy those effects packages?
But seriously- I haven't found the compressor or EQ to be that bad. Gimme an idea of what sorts of settings you use. My use of these effects has been quite conservative so far.

hi drstawl,

I got Vegas Pro with my delta 1010 bundle, and it also came with Siren express and xfx 1

I don't mess with the compressor anymore, but I noticed that it did not even work as it was supposed to. I mainly tried using it to get my sounds louder, but if I increased the input by 5db, it would still clip even if I set the compression to infinity.

As for the eq, the problem with that is that it is either not enough or too much.

on my vocals, I used to high-pass 150hz , cut about 2 db from 3.5 and high-shelf about 6 db from 12k

and it makes it sound grainier, like it suddenly converted my 24 bit data to like 16 bits or so.

the reverb is what erks me. When I listen to professional reverbs, they sound reverbed. When I listen to mine, it sounds like , I don't know how to describe it, maybe like the reverb I used to get on my karaorke machine

Anyhow, I am hoping to get logic audio real soon and I hope that will solve my problem.

thanks for your concern

ps. WHat kind of eq settings do you use on your vocals?

i dunno

Ive generally liked the Sonic Foundry plugins. I have all 3 of them all of them work fine for me. The compression works just fine, you dont need to turn the gain up on them, just leave it at 0. and i like the sonic foundry reverb better then the cake walk reverb. it all sounds fine to my ears. but i dunno. i also like waves plugin packs. the reverb is really realistic but not the kind of sound i like im using (im sure good for alot of things). i dunno though tell me what you all think about it.

but hmm, that's the difference with using a plug in and using somehting like a lexicon reverb which is what pro's use. i did an a/b test on a reverb on my pro tools system and compared it with my lexicon pcm 80, HELL OF A LOT OF DIFFERENCE.
you get what you pay for.

some studio reverbs such as the lexicon 480L 5 channel one costs like £12,000. cant really compare it to a plug in.

The effects that come with Vegas suck. You need Timeworks reverb and the Waves Rennaissance compressor.
